A recent debate popped up amongst some of my colleagues over at the paper, and it seemed as though I were in the minority when it came to the notion that Omar Vizquel belongs in the Hall of Fame.
Following in a strong tradition of Venezuelan shortstops that includes Luis Aparcio and Dave Concepcion, Vizquel debuted as a slick-fielding shortstop for the Seattle Mariners in 1989, before eventually finding himself in an Indians uniform, where he made his name and helped revitalize a franchise.
Vizquel has accumulated more seasons (21) than all but four of the 23 current Hall of Fame shortstops. And while that longevityhas effected Vizquel’s statistics with regard to hits, runs and stolen bases as a result, the further one delves into the matter, the greater the argument for...
