Phillies look to push baseball season to last possible day

Do the Phillies have another breath of air in them? they will need one in order to push the World Series to a seventh game tonight in Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are ready to celebrate their 27th World Series title but the Phillies will be more than ready to rain on their parade plans.

In a World Series that will reach the sixth game for the first time since 2003 the Phillies will send free agent acquisition Pedro Martinez to the mound. It will be the second time this World Series that Martinez will make a start in Yankee Stadium, a place he openly embraces. In game two Martinez pitched well but was given the loss as the Phillies were unable to figure out Yankees starter A.J. Burnett.

The Yankees will count on their own veteran pitcher, Andy Pettitte. Pettitte has established a healthy postseason record but he admitted that he did not pitch well in his game three start and felt fortunate to get out of the game with a win. Pettitte will be going on short rest as Yankees manager is counting on just three pitchers in this World Series. Should the Phillies win tonight CC Sabathia would be the Yankees' game seven starter in all likelihood.

Pettitte allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Two of the hits were home runs. Cole Hamels thought failed to get out of the fifth inning and allowed five runs. In Martinez's first game (game two) he went six full innings and was pulled early in the seventh inning after giving up six hits that lead to three runs. He walked two and struck out eight batters and the bullpen pitched two shutout innings in relief. But the offense only put together one run in the process.

Martinez definitely has the mind set to pitch a game good enough to keep the Phillies in it and give them a decent chance to win, but the bats will have to attack Pettitte.

Chase Utley is one home run away from breaking the tie with Reggie Jackson for most World Series home runs.
