As the last out was recorded in last night's game and the Phillies sprinted out on the field to celebrate. I couldn't help but think how impressive it was that the Phillies made it back to the World Series. No one should be surprised by the Phillies' success because just last year, the Phillies won the World Series. But there's something very different about last year and this year.Last year, everything seemed to go right for the Phillies. The Mets collapsed (again). Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Chase Utley put together huge seasons. Pat Burrell and Jayson Werth gave the Phillies much needed right handed pop. Shane Victorino gave the Phillies a swagger. Cole Hamels developed into an ace. JC Romero continued his dominance out of the bullpen. And closer Brad Lidge was perfect. But this year, so much has gone wrong for the Phillies:-Brad Lidge was terrible ($11.5 million)-JC Romero was suspended and hurt ($4 million)-Brett Myers was hurt ($12 million)-Jimmy Rollins str...

Dodgers mistake Ryan Howard, NLCS MVP, for mere mortal

Pitchers in the National League learned the hard way how to deal with Phillies slugger Ryan Howard(notes). There will be no peace, as long as you pitch to the "Big Piece."After the Phillies finished off the Dodgers with an 10-4 victory Wednesday night to capture the NL pennant for a second consecutive season, reporters named Howard the MVP of the NLCS.He batted .333 with...

Just a Quick Reminder

That this is the team the Eagles lost to on Sunday. Which raises the question: which was more improbable: Jimmy Rollins doubling in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, or the Eagles losing to a glorified semi-pro football team? If I were a gambling man, I would take the [...]

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard wins NLCS MVP

With one big swing after another, Ryan Howard delivered many of the clutch hits the Philadelphia Phillies needed to return to the World Series.

Great Take By Bowen

It's gotten to the point where I almost feel dumb linking to things everyone else reads anyway, but this is worth it for some really good perspective. I love Jimmy Rollins, but if he's so darn clutch, how come his...

Dodgers Try to Bring the Series Home

The Chinese proverb goes, "The Longest Journey Begins With a Single Step." They thought they had taken the first step last night before Jimmy Rollins straightened out a 99 mph fastball but, baseball being what it is, they go on again tonight (Thursday) in an attempt to get things back where they operate better.

Stat-ing the Obvious

The Philadelphia Phillies are following down the same path of postseason dominance that they blazed last October. Timely hitting and solid pitching has gotten the job done thus far. In '08 they won the NLDS in 4 and the NLCS in 5, '09- second verse same as the first. With a week to go before the Phils begin their final quest of WFC2, lets take time to look at the stats from...

Howard's big stick carries Philadelphia's offense

With one big swing after another, Ryan Howard delivered many of the clutch hits the Philadelphia Phillies needed to return to the World Series.

*GASP* Manny Flakes on his Teammates

So Manny was taking a shower while his team lost a game.  Are you shocked?  Me neither.  It is as if the Dodgers suddenly realized that Manny Ramirez comes with some baggage.  Couldn't they figure it out when the Red Sox paid them to take Manny?  Here's how Manny responded to reporter's questions about showergate: "I caught the highlights. The Philadelphia...

Tim Panaccio: Flyers Need a "Hero"

Do the Flyers have a Jimmy Rollins? A Ryan Howard? A Jayson Werth? I think they do but ... When the going gets tough, the Flyers, lately, have disappeared. My theory today in the dressing room _ it was not appreciated by team captain Mike Richards or coach John Stevens _ was that the Flyers, at this moment, do NOT have a clutch guy,...
