The first two days of the off-season have seen quite a bit of movement across the league ... except for on the North Side of Chicago. The Cubs completed their organizational meetings on Friday in Arizona and other than Reed Johnson and Rich Harden declaring free agency, not much out of the Cubs' camp. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. Jim Hendry has little payroll flexibility and will likely rely on making trades to improve (or fix) the big league team for next season. It is only the first Saturday in November and the Cubs have a lot of big contracts with no-trade clauses attached to them. Hendry has a lot of work to do ... and Ted Lilly having his shoulder scoped last Tuesday should have changed the direction and/or plans the Cubs had for the winter at the beginning of the week. With the GM meetings getting underway on Monday in Chicago, here is the latest from the mill ... and a little news too.

Cubs Rumor Round-up: DeRosa, Harden and Johnson

- Buried in this Stltoday.com artcile is this nugget: DeRosa, coming off wrist surgery, figures to field an offer from the Chicago Cubs, at the least.  Seems like idle speculation than anything legit, but at least the Wrigley-ites would be cheering for the right team if it did happen. (Hat tip to Bleacher Nation for the find) - Paul Sullivan says the Cubs...

Harden and Johnson File for Free Agency

According to a report on Cubs.com, Rich Harden and Reed Johnson were among the 79 players to file for free agency on Thursday. The Cubs have exclusive negotiating rights until November 20 to work out new contracts with all of their potential free agents ... Reed Johnson, Rich Harden, John Grabow, Kevin Gregg and Chad Fox.

Aaaaand Here We Go…

The cap to one helluva busy day, MLB transaction-wise is, at least for Cub fans, the kickoff of the Cubs offseason, as Reed Johnson and Rich Harden filed for free agency: The Cubs’ Reed Johnson and Rich Harden didn’t waste any time. Johnson and Harden were among the 79 Major League players who filed for free agency on Thursday, the first day they were eligible to do...

2009 Recap: Rich Harden

I told you all about how Ryan Dempster let the Cubs in strikeouts. As it turns out, he almost didn't. Rich Harden pitched 59 fewer innings, started five fewer games -- and at the end of the season, only trailed Demp by one in the strikeout category. Of his 26 starts, Harden racked up eight or more strikeouts in 12 of them. As you may or may not know, 12 is really close to half...

Cubs seem ready to let Harden, Johnson go

Free agents' contract situations a difficult fit for Cubs' plans There's no question Rich Harden and Reed Johnson would prefer to return to the Cubs in 2010, and in a perfect world, Jim Hendry would probably re-sign both.

Buzz: Harden and Johnson Could Be Out in Chicago

in a report in today’s Chicago Tribune, Paul Sullivan says that while both Rich Harden and Reed Johnson would like to remain with the Cubs, their return appears to be unlikely. Sullivan says that Harden’s injury history makes signing a long term deal with the Cubs unlikely, and considering the Cubs want to move Kosuke Fukudome [...]

Reed & Harden Are Cubs Free Agents

More than 120 players have jumped into baseball’s free-agent money pool, two of which are Cubs: Reed Johnson and Rich Harden. Without hesitation, I’d bring Reed back in a second. He’s a good clubhouse guy, is versatile throughout the lineup and truly enjoys playing for the Cubs organization. Harden, on the other hand, is way too [...]

Chicago Cubs Likely To Part Ways with Rich Harden: Time for Yanks To Attack?

On Saturday evening, Chicago Tribune writer Paul Sullivan reported that the Chicago Cubs could soon part ways with both pitcher Rich Harden and outfielder Reed Johnson...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...

Cubs’ Ace Has Shoulder Surgery

I’ve said numerous times Ted Lilly is the true ace of the Cubs’ rotation. Of course, I’m always repeating myself because the man barely gets recognized as one by the media or even his hometown fans. Don’t ask me why, either? In my eyes the whole conversation is plain as day. Break it down however you like, but [...]

I Has A Sad

The Yankees won their 2 millionth World Series last night. Well, whoopty-*******-do! I seriously don't think there is a team that I hate more than the Yankees. I don't give a crap about how they buy their players. You know who else has jumped on the huge salary bandwagon? Yep, our Cubbies. And what do we have to show for it? Six straight playoff loses and a DNF. Regardless...

Without option-based contracts, not much early Cubs activity

Two days after the World Series, and nothing has happened so far to harm or help us.  There is a reason behind this: much of the activity you see at the moment pertains to players with contracts specifying "Club options for 2010".  At the risk of sounding remedial, take the case of Jermaine Dye as an example.  His contract has a club option for 2010 - The...
