By Andrew Wagner FoxSportsWisconsin.com MILWAUKEE Marquette opened its season Friday night against Mount St. Mary's but did so without freshman Juan Anderson, who was suspended for three games for an NCAA violation.According to a statement from the university, Anderson's offense was acceptance of a free ticket to a Milwaukee Brewers game. The incident was self-reported by Marquette and the NCAA handed down its ruling Friday evening. "Our compliance department does a significant amount of rules education for the student-athletes and staff, yet this situation shows how easily it is to make a mistake," Acting athletic director Mike Broeker said in the statement. "Juan was cooperative, apologetic and understood the consequences." The 6-foot-6, 195-pound freshman was head coach Buzz Williams' first commitment for the 2011-12 season and the first West Coast recruit for the fourth-year coach. He chose Marquette over offers from Arizona State, California and Oregon. "I apologize to my teammates and coaches for the mistake I made," Anderson said. "My college eligibility is much too valuable for me to risk. I should have been more aware, but I have learned from my mistake."In addition to the season opener against Mount St. Mary's, Anderson will also sit out games against Norfolk State (Nov. 14) and Winthrop (Nov. 18) in the opening game of the Paradise Jam in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He'll be eligible to return in the Golden Eagles' second-round game of that tournament. "Juan is a great representative of our program on and off the floor," Williams said. "This was a learning opportunity for everyone in our program, but he still must endure the consequences."
