Meet the Celtics new coach…a few days late There are few times when a site going down would be convenient for its writers, but for us here at Celtics Town, going down right before the Boston Celtics shock the basketball world and hire a young college stud of a coach is perhaps the least convenient time ever. As a result, we are severely behind all of the Brad Stevens news, and for that, we apologize. Fortunately, Jordan’s tireless work allowed me to log in for the first time in about a week this morning, so here we are. I love this hire. You may recall that in this post I outlined my three basic requirements for Boston’s next head coach. Stevens fits all of those parameters and surpasses them by reportedly having Rajon Rondo’s support, as well as by being an excellent interview for the media. Gold stars, all around. Instead of telling you a bunch of information you already know, here’s a list of excellent links that you should read, if you haven’t already. A must-see/read from CelticsBlog: Jared Weiss of CLNS Radio was at the Celtics’ practice facility for Stevens’ introductory press conference, and he captures interviews with Stevens, Danny Ainge and (perhaps most interestingly) Stevens’ agent/wife, who — like Stevens — is an intelligent, interesting interview. She says (paraphrased) that as he was watching film of the Celtics, he had a big smile realizing that this was the level of talent he gets to coach now. An inexperienced coach like Stevens needs a leash, and he needs some flexibility from Boston’s higher-ups to get him through the first couple years. Chris Mannix writes that Stevens will have exactly that. Sean Deveney of Sporting News doesn’t agree with the rumors that Rondo won’t want to play for a first-time coach, and he has a couple of sources who back him up. On a related note, this piece from Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston is very good, and perhaps more importantly, it includes this tidbit from Danny Ainge: “[Rondo said,] ‘Oh, Is that the guy that coached Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack?’” recounted Ainge. “I go, ‘Yeah, yeah, that’s the guy.’ [Rondo said,] ‘Oh, yeah. That sounds great.’” Forsberg, again, with a bunch of fun anecdotes outlining the process Boston went through of hiring Stevens. One quote in particular: Ainge had just offered a six year/$22 million deal that would eventually prove to be the final parameters of the contract. But the meeting was cut short. From Forsberg: That meeting ended abruptly due to a plumbing issue at the Stevens’ basketball camp that forced Tracy to go troubleshoot. “They were running a basketball camp at Butler and his wife had to leave the meeting early to go fix the toilets at the basketball camp,” Ainge said with a laugh. “I sent her a quick text on her way out [that said], ‘You don’t have to do that with the Celtics, we have someone that does that.’” Baxter Holmes of The Boston Globe breaks things down nicely with a lot of interesting quotes. The best one: Ainge added, with a wry smile, “Plus, guys from Indiana have done well with the Celtics.” We have the site back up and running now, just in time for the Orlando Summer League, which our own Thomas King will be covering in person. Look forward to lots of great stuff in the next week as we get our first in-game look at Kelly Olynyk and others. Follow Tom on Twitter: @Tom_NBA.
