The Atlanta Braves have acquired catcher Ryan Doumit from the Minnesota Twins, as confirmed by David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports was the first to report that Doumit was likely to be heading to Atlanta. Heading the other way will be left-handed pitching prospect Sean Gilmartin.#Braves have acquired catcher Ryan Doumit from the Twins for LHP Sean Gilmartin— David O'Brien (@ajcbraves) December 18, 2013With Brian McCann heading to New York, the Braves were left with Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird as their only catchers. O'Brien suggests that having Doumit on the roster will allow manager Fredi Gonzalez to pinch-hit with Gattis and Laird when they aren't starting. Doumit, primarily a DH for the Twins, has also played over 100 games in the outfield, so Atlanta will be able to use him for depth there if necessary, although he rates poorly defensively. After Doumit spent time on the concussion DL in 2013, the Twins did stop using him at catcher altogether for the last month and a half of the season, so it is to be hoped that he does not experience a recurrence of those symptoms if he does take a few more foul tips.Gilmartin, 23, has seen his stock fall a long way since he was a first-round draft pick for the Braves in 2011. He performed reasonably well in Double-A, striking out over three times as many batters as he walked and posting a 1.15 WHIP and 3.54 ERA, but was crushed to the tune of a 5.47 ERA over 128 2/3 innings at Triple-A. Shoulder tendonitis sent Gilmartin to the DL in June and may have factored in to his poor performance, but the Braves have clearly revised their opinion of him to the point where they have relatively low long-term expectations.

The Uptons and Making Contact

Earlier this year, Bill Petti mentioned in his CLIFFORD work the single largest driver in a player’s wOBA collapse from one year to the next was Z-Contact%. Players that saw their Z-Contact% decline by at least 1.4% had a 1.68 times the odds of seeing their wOBA collapse that season than those that did not experience such a decline. As with any correlation, nothing is a guarantee...

Atlanta-Area Tea Party Chapter Unhappy With New Braves Stadium, Plans to Sue to Block Construction

People in Atlanta are not happy with the prospect of a new Atlanta Braves stadium in Cobb County, and one group plans to take some extreme action. The Atlanta Tea Party Patriots plan to file a lawsuit against the Cobb County Board of Commissioners to block construction of the new stadium, according to Bloomberg. The chapter takes issue with the fact that construction of the $672...

Braves agree on 1-year deal with Beachy

The Braves reached agreement on a one-year $1.45 million contract with Brandon Beachy on Monday, avoiding arbitration with the 27-year-old right-hander. Beachy made only five starts in 2013 (going 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA) as his comeback from Tommy John surgery stalled with recurring elbow pain. Beachy underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs on Sept. 26. His agent Rob Martin...

What the Ryan Doumit trade says about Evan Gattis

Evan Gattis celebrates a HR in a game against the Minnesota Twins. In the middle is Ryan Doumit, acquired today to compete for the starting catching job for the Atlanta Braves. The Braves made a trade today to get Minnesota Twins C/OF/ DH Ryan Doumit for a decent pitching prospect. Like a lot of moves the Braves made, they are fairly shrewd; more times than not working out...

Braves acquire Doumit from Twins for Gilmartin

The Braves are positioning themselves to carry three catchers for another season. They acquired Ryan Doumit from the Twins in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Sean Gilmartin, adding to a position where Atlanta already has Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird. Doumit, 32, is a .268 career hitter with 99 home runs and 396 RBI in 880 games and owns a .262 average (28 for 107) as...

Sox Sign Veteran Lefty Reliever Scott Downs

While most moves the White Sox' front office has made this offseason have been aimed to help the club way down the line, Rick Hahn has sprinkled in a couple that present a boost for the immediate future. Early Thursday the second bullpen-related deal of that nature went down when the team inked veteran lefty Scott Downs. Another acquisition of some serious flow. Credit...

2013 Holiday Card

I'm always hesitant to criticize the front office, but can we please compare the Braves holiday card (apparently posted on 12/4 but we didn't get the email until 12/16)... And the Mets holiday card (posted 11/21)... You'd think the Braves forgot they needed to send something out!

Braves acquire Ryan Doumit from Twins

getty ima The Atlanta Braves have added Ryan Doumit from the Minnesota Twins. Doumit, 32, finished the 2013 season with a .247/.314/.396 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI. The Braves will assume all of the $3.5 million owed to Doumit. In order to get the versatile Doumit the Braves traded away Sean Gilmartin. The left handed Gilmartin, 23, was the first round pick of the Braves in 2011...
