Celtics 110, Jazz 107 (OT) Five games in seven nights. A marathon of basketball and travel that would even leave young players exhausted. The Celtics (30-27) key players, however, are not young, and were certainly not happy when the final game of their west coast road trip went into overtime on Monday night. But these are professionals, and even though he was too exhausted to celebrate with the patented NBA ‘jump and bump,’ Paul Pierce continued to hit big shots for his team down the stretch. The Captain nailed a jumper to put the C’s up 97-95 at at the end of the fourth quarter, and after the Jazz (31-26) took a brief lead to start the overtime, he scored seven unanswered points to put Boston up 106-101. The signs of fatigue were everywhere in this game. At one point during the extra period Kevin Garnett laid out to knock away an entry pass, and then paused for a good 10 seconds to consider how challenging it was to get back on his feet. Now K.G. and the rest of the Celtics veteran players can ice their knees, visit the chiropractor, and do whatever it is that old people do in order to recharge their batteries. Boston has three days off before they host a terrific Golden State Warriors team this Friday, and they will likely cherish every moment of respite. Once again, Doc Rivers deserves a ton of credit for this win. He must have made some critical adjustments at halftime, because the C’s came out on fire. They started the third quarter on a 22-7 run and turned a five-point deficit into an eight-point lead by the end of the frame. However this was truly a game of runs, it seemed as though every few minutes one of these teams would go on an 11-2 run, and the fact that there were 17 ties and 13 lead changes throughout the contest attests to the back-and-forth feel of this gritty matchup. Grinding out wins in this fashion is the calling card of the Celtics during the Garnett era. Some of the younger players and new additions may not be familiar with this formula, but it was a classically tough victory. Boston has been exposed at times during this road trip, yet they have to come out of it feeling stronger and more determined than ever. With their next game on March 1st, the C’s can concentrate on playing one and a half months of solid basketball in order to fine tune team chemistry and advance their playoff positioning. Until then, (as Pierce told Greg Dickerson during a post-game interview) the ’35-and-up group’ will enjoy some well earned time off.

Photo Gallery: Paul Pierce’s “Black History Month” Legacy 3′s

I occasionally get questions on Twitter about what sneakers players are wearing during games.  But no sneaker this season has gotten more “what ARE those?” than the kicks Paul Pierce has busted out the past few games. Pierce is still wearing his usual Nike Legacy 3′s… but he’s wearing a special “Black History Month” colorway that features a distinctive pattern and...

Still Can’t Handle the Truth

Washed up. Over the hill. On the decline. Those are just a few of the adjectives used to describe Boston Celtics’ captain Paul Pierce these days. But while the 14-year veteran might just laugh them off as nonsensical banter, his stat line suggests otherwise. Through 57 games for the Celtics, Pierce is averaging 18.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists in over 33.9 minutes per...

Recap: Matthews out-duels Pierce

The Blazers had lost seven straight going into tonight’s game, but Wesley freakin’ Matthews made sure that’s where the streak would end.  The C’s got big games out of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, but those two didn’t get a ton of help.  They drop a very winnable game 92-86. The Green: The Truth came to play.  After early foul trouble, Pierce carried the Celtics and...

DeMarre Carroll talks about friendly rivalry with Paul Pierce, it’s ‘a summer thing’

After Monday’s overtime win against the Utah Jazz, Paul Pierce said that his late game duel with DeMarre Carroll dated back to this summer but left it up to the Jazz forward to fill in the details. Carroll explained further to the Salt Lake Tribune’s Steve Luhm at the Jazz’s Tuesday morning practice:“It’s just a summer thing,” Carroll said, explaining he often works out...

Green Envy: What Jazz fans said - 2/25/13

Before I went to check the Jazz forums, I predicted that the bulk of the talk would be on three things: Horrible officiating at times and the fact that Celtics fans' cheers were quite audible, garnished with some OT hate on Paul Pierce. What I've seen though was a fan base that hated their coach and mocked their players for pages in a way that's quite funny. Almost zero...

Celtics Co-owner Wyc Grousbeck believes Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett's jerseys will both be retired

The Boston Celtics have retired more jersey numbers than any other professional sports team in the USA with a count of 21. And according to co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, it looks like both #34 and #5 will be added to the rafters when Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett retire in the near future. In an interview with WEEI.com, Grousbeck said this about Pierce: “We’re going to retire...

Celtics’ Beer Prices Second-Highest in NBA at $8, Knicks, Suns Tied for Most Expensive

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were not the only people who came away disgruntled after the Eastern Conference Finals last spring. Beer-drinkers could not have been happy, either, after taking a hit in the wallet whenever they wanted to get lubed up. The Celtics have the second-most expensive beer prices in the NBA at $8 a cup, according to Business Insider, matching the Heat and...

Celtics-Jazz Live: Paul Pierce, Celts Try to End Road Trip on Winning Note in Salt Lake City

8:32 p.m.: The D.J. White waiting game continues. Multiple reports say the Celtics and the 26-year-old forward have come to an agreement for the 6-foot-9 Indiana product to join the team, but there appears to be a snag with the paperwork. As a result, White is still not officially a Celtic and cannot play with the team, even though all indications are that he was ready to go as early...

Celtics Co-Owner Wyc Grousbeck ‘Can’t Imagine’ Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce Not Having Numbers Retired

As if there were really any doubt, Celtics fans can rest assured that No. 34 and No. 5 will indeed hang from the rafters of the TD Garden one day, along with the numbers worn by rest of the Celtics’ all-time greats. Wyc Grousbeck, managing partner and co-owner of the Celtics, confirmed Tuesday that Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, future Hall of Famers who helped bring a 17th NBA...

Recap: Truth, KG and company end trip with gusty win

The young guns, specifically Avery Bradley, kept the C’s in this one, and the vets finished it off. Despite weary legs and some lapses in defense, Boston gets a gutsy 110-107 win in OT in Utah.  Paul Pierce took the game over late, hitting clutch shot after clutch shot in the 4th and the OT.  Pierce was 3 of 3 in overtime, and 5 of 9 for 55% in the 4th & OT. His partner in...

Celtics Owner Wyc Grousbeck Discusses Pierce, Garnett’s Legacy In Interview On WEEI

Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck joined Mut and Merloni on WEEI 93.7 FM for an hour long interview this Tuesday. When asked about the legacy of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, and whether they would have their numbers retired in the rafters with the other legends, Grousbeck said that he didn’t really want to think about that while these guys were still playing. However, later he said...

Your Morning Dump…where Wyc would retire Garnett’s number

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump  “These are guys that I can’t imagine giving those numbers out to anybody else,” Grousbeck said on WEEI. Grousbeck called Pierce the “linchpin” of the Celtics’ success during his tenure, which predates...

5 Things Celtics must do to win tomorrow - Warriors 3/1

Tomorrow, the 30-27 Celtics will finally head home to host the Golden State Warriors. The Celtics are coming off of a pretty disappointing road-trip, in which they went just 2-3. They were able to make up for a 1-3 start partially with a terrific OT victory over the Jazz Monday night. Let's hope that they can carry that momentum into the Garden. Here are their five keys to victory...
