Fresh off Oregon’s 35-17 victory against Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl, Chip Kelly has been talking to a few NFL teams looking for a head coach. Chip met with the Buffalo Bills earlier this week and will talk with the Eagles today. Yet the Cleveland Browns look like the front runners for securing Kelly as the head coach to replace Pat Shurmur who was let go by the Browns as Kelly met with Cleveland Friday and today.
Kelly has been meeting with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner. The Browns are a young team and hope that Kelly can use his magic that worked in college and bring his success to the NFL. Coach Kelly is known for his high powered and fast offense in Oregon. As the Ducks head coach, Kelly has a record of 46-7 and averaged a little under 50 points per game this season. It would be interesting to see what Kelly would do with a team that has a powerful running back in Trent Richardson and quarterback Brandon Weeden, who has shown some promise in season that saw the Browns go 5-11.
In other head coaching news the Carolina Panthers confirmed that head coach Ron Rivera will be back next season. According to NFL.com Rivera met with the Panthers owner Jerry Richardson today to learn that he will be able to return for his third year. Ron had a four year contract and depending how the Panthers do next year, he could be back for his final year. Earlier this season Richardson fired Marty Hurney who was the Panthers General Manager when the Panthers had a record of 1-5. Since that point the Panthers won six of their last ten games and showed improvement which helped Rivera’s case to be back for another year.
Once hearing of Rivera’s fate, tight end Greg Olson said “I’m very happy he’s back. Obviously the season wasn’t what we were looking for, but I think the way we finished showed that we’re heading in the right direction. The guys have a lot of faith in Coach Rivera and guys didn’t want to let him down. I think the way we finished, winning four straight, shows a lot about the direction we’re headed and our faith in him as our coach moving forward. I’m glad that things worked out.”
