When it comes time for the NFL draft on Thursday night, there will be no controversy when commissioner Roger Goodell walks to the podium and says “With the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select…”. No one will be holding their breath, wondering who they will pick. Rejoice, Colts fans. The wondering is over. Colts GM Ryan Grigson has confirmed that the Colts will select Andrew Luck (QB, Stanford) with the number 1 overall pick.

After weeks of speculation, with reports that Luck wasn’t a lock for the Colts and that they had at least played out the idea that Baylor QB Robert Griffin III could be their pick, General Manager Ryan Grigson confirmed today after a voluntary mini-camp practice that the team would be selecting Andrew Luck with their first overall pick. During the post-practice press conference, Grigson told the media:

“In fairness to Andrew Luck and fairness to the whole process — the media gauntlet he’s going to be enduring the next couple of days — I thought it was the right thing to do to announce we’re going to take him. I didn’t see the point in prolonging what the world already knows.”

Even though a source last week broke the news that Luck had been told by the team that they would select him, nothing was confirmed until the press conference today. With Luck being picked first, that leaves the Redskins to draft Robert Griffin, III with the second pick, which they sent their first and second-round selections this year, plus their first-rounders in 2013 and 2014 for.

Luck could have forgone his senior season last year and very well been a top-5 pick, but instead it seems like he made the right choice by returning to Stanford, as now he is the no-doubt overall #1 pick to the Indianapolis Colts. He is set to replace long-time Colts franchise Quarterback Peyton Manning. Expectations are high, but the Colts seem confident that their luck is about to change.
