Quick, name the player that is the clear favorite for the Heisman Trophy this season?  Still waiting.....  OK, seriously, give up guessing already because through three weeks of the college football season we haven't seen anyone break out ahead of the pack in the race for the Heisman Trophy. Well, then let us suggest one name people probably didn't have on their radar to start the season and now should—Wisconsin's very own Melvin Gordon.  It's not nearly as far-fetched as you would think either considering the last three winners all came out of nowhere to win the most prestigious individual trophy given out in the college football world.  Cam Newton in 2010, RGIII in 2011, and Johnny Football in 2012—all three weren't on the conference player of the year radar, let alone the best player in the nation radar when they went on to win the Heisman Trophy.  So, we submit the name of Melvin Gordon for serious consideration in 2013.  After t...

Badgers report card: RB Melvin Gordon makes case for more carries

Wisconsin lost an absolute heartbreaker on Saturday night, 32-30, at Arizona State. Like many of the Badgers' losses in recent years, the game was close and contained its share of controversy when Wisconsin ran out of time before spiking a ball to set up a potential game-winning field goal. This is one of those losses that will probably linger for quite some time because of...

Wisconsin's Gary Andersen frustrated after 'gut wrenching' loss

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Gary Andersen didn't complain when asked about the lack of adversity No.20 Wisconsin faced leading up to its road test at Arizona State. The way the Badgers' first-year head coach saw it, his veteran team was well-equipped to handle the variety of challenges that would test their mental mettle. He also refused to complain after it appears Wisconsin had a...

Referees cost Wisconsin against ASU in controversial ending

In over a decade of watching football, both collegiate and professional, I am not sure if I have ever seen a mistake like this. Yes, you could point to mistakes like last year’s Green Bay Packers vs Seattle Seahawks game where the referees blew the games. However, those were replacement referees. But, tonight, this game and these refs made those replacement referees look like...

Officials from Wisconsin-ASU game reprimanded by Pac-12

MADISON, Wis. -- In the aftermath of the most controversial loss this college football season, all Gary Andersen could stress was accountability. Nothing would change Wisconsin's 32-30 defeat against Arizona State on Saturday night, but somebody in charge needed to acknowledge referees botched the game's final sequence to provide at least a small measure of closure. As Andersen...

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon maximizing every opportunity

MADISON, Wis. -- In most college football programs, talk would center on the performance of a running back on track to end his career with the best yards-per-carry average of any player with at least 300 carries in team history. He would be celebrated across the nation as the FBS active career leader among tailbacks for rushing yards and touchdowns. In other words, he would earn...

After bizarre loss, Wisconsin focuses on Purdue

No. 24 Wisconsin is trying to move past an excruciating and bizarre loss, and focus on its Big Ten opener against Purdue. The Badgers (2-1) lost 32-30 to Arizona State when officials erred in allowing the clock to expire, denying the Badgers the opportunity to attempt a possible game-winning field goal. The Pac-12 issued a statement Monday acknowledging the errors by its officiating...

Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave thought he had downed the football, but the refs kept the clock running and gave Arizona State a bizarre, 32-30 win.

Jesse Temple's Sept. 18 Badgers mailbag

Apparently, Wisconsin football fans wanted to discuss last week's game against Arizona State a little more this week. I wonder why? In this week's mailbag, we touch on the talent of running back Melvin Gordon and the Badgers' problems in the secondary. We also get a response on the Pac-12 replay review system from the conference's vice president of communications...

Badgers five things: Wisconsin looked unsettled late vs. Arizona State

Wisconsin football fans are used to their share of close-game heartbreak in recent years, and they can add another epic defeat to the list following Saturday night's stunning 32-30 loss against Arizona State. Badgers quarterback Joel Stave took a 2-yard loss to help his team line up a potential 32-yard game-winning field goal in the middle of the field. But in a bizarre series...
