GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Nail Yakupov scored a power-play goal at 3:52 of overtime and the Edmonton Oilers fought back after giving up a goal late in regulation to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 Wednesday night. The Oilers appeared to be on their way to helping Devan Dubnyk to his fifth career shutout, but put their goalie in a bind when Sam Gagner was called for a penalty and the Coyotes pulled goalie Chad Johnson. Nick Johnson took advantage, whipping a shot past Dubnyk's glove side with 19 seconds left in regulation after teammate Radim Vrbata failed on a backhander. Yakupov ended it in overtime, punching in a rebound after a shot by Ales Hemsky caromed off teammate Taylor Hall. Dubnyk stopped 27 shots and Lennart Petrell scored his first goal since Feb. 27, helping the Oilers end a five-game losing streak to Phoenix. Chad Johnson had 19 saves after notching his first NHL shutout two days earlier. Coming off their best game of the season, the Coyotes found themselves in a familiar position: Wondering what will happen after the latest chapter in their ownership saga. Since a new lease agreement with the City of Glendale was reworked in November, it appeared former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison would have no trouble buying the team from the NHL before a Jan. 31 deadline. Jamison told the Arizona Republic this week that he expected to have the deal done in time. But on Wednesday, a league official told The Associated Press it was unlikely Jamison would have the money or investors he needs to purchase the team before the midnight Thursday deadline, leaving the team in limbo yet again. Of course, the Coyotes have played well against the backdrop of uncertainty in the past, reaching the playoffs each of the past three seasons -- making the Western Conference finals for the first time last year -- while potential owners come and go. Phoenix got back to its defense-first style in a 4-0 win over Nashville on Monday night, and limited Edmonton's chances in front of Johnson. Johnson did give up a big rebound on a shot by Ryan Smyth in the first period and Petrell jumped on it, punching in the puck from just outside the crease. Johnson was steady after that, turning away the limited chances the Oilers had against him. Dubnyk was sharp his last outing, turning away 38 shots -- 24 in the third period -- in a 4-1 win over Colorado on Monday. He was just as good against the Coyotes, finding pucks easily through traffic and making a couple of snatching glove saves on hard shots by Phoenix. Dubnyk appeared to be headed toward his first shutout in nearly a year, but Johnson scored his second goal of the season to send the game to overtime. NOTES: Phoenix LW Raffi Torres served the final game of his 25-game suspension for a hit on Chicago's Marian Hossa in last year's playoffs. He will return to the lineup Friday night at Dallas. ... Gagner had an assist on Petrell's goal, extending his points streak to six games. ... Oilers LW Ben Eager missed his fifth straight game with a concussion. ... Coyotes G Mike Smith is expected to come off injured reserved from a lower-body injury and could possibly start on Friday.

Derek Morris attacks Ryan Whitney during Oilers' OT victory celebration (Video)

Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris attacked Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney as he celebrated teammate Nail Yakupov's game-winning overtime goal in Wednesday night's 2-1 Oilers victory. Whitney got the assist on Yakupov's power play goal at 3:52 into overtime, but Morris thought the puck deflected off Whitney's glove, which would have been a hand...

Oilers 2, Coyotes 1 (OT)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Nail Yakupov scored a power-play goal 3:52 into overtime to give Edmonton a 2-1 victory over Phoenix on Wednesday, enabling the Oilers to break a five-game losing streak in the series. Yakupov scored his fourth goal of the season, tipping in a puck sent toward goaltender Chad Johnson after Coyotes center Antoine Vermette was called for high-sticking against...

Smith back in net as Coyotes visit Stars

The Phoenix Coyotes are probably hoping Mike Smith returns to form when he is back on the ice. Smith is expected to play for the visiting Coyotes on Friday night when they try to hand the Dallas Stars a fifth straight loss in the opener of a home-and-home set. Smith will be back for Phoenix (2-4-1) after missing four games with a lower-body injury. Jason LaBarbera and Chad Johnson...

Bill Daly On The Phoenix Coyotes Sale Process

NEW YORK (Feb. 1, 2013) -- National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly today released the following statement regarding the Phoenix Coyotes sale process: “We remain hopeful the Coyotes sale process will be resolved successfully and we will continue to work with the City of Glendale to move the process forward.” added 12:04pm, GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes...

Richard Cloutier: Horcoff Out; Paajarvi Out; Lander in; Petrell Has a Sore Paw

As I suspected, Shawn Horcoff was injured by the perfectly innocent hit from behind provided by Phoenix winger Shane Doan. Not only should have Doan received a penalty for that hit, but it should have been sent to the league for review. Absolute cheap-shot. Anton Lander has been called up and will play for Horcoff tonight. In order for the Oilers to make roster room, it was necessary...

Torres alters his thinking after suspension

Raffi Torres' game is based on force and fury, his hard-hitting style fueling his teammates and inspiring fear in opponents. But as he sat out for 21 games, the result of a suspension for hitting Chicago's Marian Hossa in last year's playoffs, the Phoenix Coyotes left wing had to rethink the way he plays, find a way to retain his aggressiveness and remove some of the...

Yakupov Rallies Again

Listening to Don Cherry on CBC's coach's corner Saturday, you would think that Nail Yakupov committed sports biggest foul. But looking at the source, that reaction was to be expected, Mr. Cherry is old school and while he can be quite outspoken, he prefers his hockey players to be quiet and demure small town Canadian boys. As we all know, Yakupov is very Russian, and he...

Greg Jamison Unlikely to Complete Deal to Buy Phoenix Coyotes from NHL

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The prospective owner of the Phoenix Coyotes is unlikely to complete a deal to buy the team from the NHL before a lease agreement with the City of Glendale expires, a league official told The Associated Press on Thursday. Barring a last-minute change, former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison won’t have the money or investors in place to meet the midnight Thursday...

Richard Cloutier: Oilers Win the Worst Game in History of Hockey

Shane Doan's dirty hit on Shawn Horcoff near the end of the 3rd period should have been a 5 and a game penalty. It wasn't. Actually, Sam Gagner from the Oilers got a penalty because the refs thought he was tackled improperly by Coyotes forward Nick Johnson. Horcoff left the game, and my guess is, he has a concussion. Doan, as usual, got away with it. I love his talent, but...

Two Rookie Of The Year Awards In The Same Season?

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun, The American Hockey League has determined that Justin Schultz is eligible to be their rookie of the year. Jason Chaimovitch from the AHL office has done the research and informed your correspondent Tuesday Schultz looks to be legal. “It’s an unusual circumstance but I took a look at our by-laws and I do not think there are any...

Richard Cloutier: Yandle, Go Get-all

Damn you Bob Stauffer. As usual, I'm up to late writing. Working on a Business Plan for the office, if you must know. Earlier in the day, I wrote half of a blog...the key message in it was that Ryan Whitney looks like he's done, and the Oilers need to find a Top 4 left-pairing defenseman to deal for. After going through a big pile of team rosters, the name Keith Yandle...

Sharks move to 7-0 after shootout win over Oilers

SAN JOSE -- Edmonton's Devan Dubnyk became the first goalie to stop Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, but his Oilers teammates couldn't end the Sharks' other streak. San Jose improved to a perfect 7-0 as Michal Handzus and Dan Boyle scored in the shootout for a 3-2 win over the young Oilers on Thursday night. "It was a pretty good road game," Dubnyk said...

Oilers-Coyotes Preview

The Phoenix Coyotes just turned to a goaltender who hadn't made an NHL start in three years. The result was the team's best defensive effort of the season. With starter Mike Smith injured and backup Jason LaBarbera struggling, coach Dave Tippett may again turn to Chad Johnson on Wednesday night when the Coyotes go for their sixth consecutive victory over the visiting Edmonton...
