The San Diego Padres still own the majors' worst record, but at least their season-worst losing streak is over.
Padres right-hander Edinson Volquez would like to end his personal slide.
Volquez will try to avoid losing a career high-tying fourth consecutive start Saturday when San Diego and the Arizona Diamondbacks continue their series at Petco Park.
Back from a 1-9 trip, the Padres (18-35) snapped a six-game losing streak - the team's longest since a nine-game skid Aug. 24-Sept. 3 - with a 7-1 victory Friday.
Sparked by Jesus Guzman's pinch-hit two-run homer, San Diego scored six runs in the eighth inning en route to its season-best third straight victory at Petco.
"It's nice to see a lot of guys make contributions," manager Bud Black said. "I like the way we added on there in the eighth."
Volquez (2-5, 3.46 ERA) will try to lead the Padres to their first 4-0 stretch in San Diego since sweeping Florida from Aug. 18-21. He has a 5.40 ERA in...

San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin got pranked by his teammates Yonder Alonso and Andy Parrino recently when the team was in New York to play the Mets. The three teammates went to a burger joint in New York and Maybin ordered a huge burger while Alonso and Parrino ordered something else. While they were eating their meals, a few of the patrons ran to the bathroom and the waitress...
Sources: The Padres are calling up catcher Yasmani Grandal from Tucson. The switch hitting catcher aquired this off season in the Mat Latos trade appears to be headed to San Diego to join the big league team. In 34 games with AAA Tucson Grandal hit .317/.421/.500 with 10 doubles and four homeruns for the TPads.
The Padres' struggling offense sent out mixed signals from the three-game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago that paralleled the debut of left fielder Carlos Quentin with San Diego. Quentin went 7-for-12 with three doubles, three home runs and six RBI in the three games. Quentin's three-game 2012 debut marked the first time this season that a Padre hitter had three home...
It’s time for interleague play and that means a need for an extra bat coming off the bench. The Padres made a move on Friday in an effort to add some additional punch to its lineup by calling up Yasmani Grandal from Triple-A Tucson and designating veteran pitcher Jeff Suppan for assignment.
LIKE A HURRICANE: Yasmani Grandal as a University of Miami catcher.
The Cuban born Grandal...
Dan Hayes is reporting via twitter: Andy Parrino to the disabled list; Logan Forsythe will be activated tomorrow.
The San Diego Padres today announced they have recalled catcher Yasmani Grandal from Triple-A Tucson and have designated right-handed pitcher Jeff Suppan for assignment.
They say in the baseball business, you need a short memory. Whether you just walked a batter after getting squeezed on a called strike three or have just grounded into your second consecutive double-play, you need to clear your mind and focus on the task ahead.
This holds true for a Padres fan, especially after a 1-9 road trip to end what is usually their most successful month...
The offensive explosion we saw on Friday night couldn't repeat itself yesterday. Instead we had a pitcher's duel most of the game, and it really was a close game. Also the Padres made things a little interesting in the 9th, but it ulitmately ended on a caught line drive off Jesus Guzman's bat. It's Sunday now and that means time for the rubber match. It feels like...
Erik Hamren has launched a scathing attack on the Swedish FA’s (SvFF) scheduling after their Under-21 side was beaten 6-0...
After a day off, the Padres are back in San Diego. They will start a series with the Diamondbacks that will run through Sunday. Kind of fitting that the first game of this series is the night of the beer fest. I say that because after the way this game is playing I think a lot of fans need a drink or two. Tonight is also a Friarhood event, so I hope that most of you can make it out...
Jesus Guzman's pinch-hit two-run homer ignited a sixth-run eighth inning and lifted the San Diego Padres to a 7-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Guzman's shot broke a 1-all tie as San Diego sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth off three pitchers. He connected on a 1-1 changeup off rookie Wade Miley (6-2) into the left-field stands to help the Padres...
SAN DIEGO -- What began with a misunderstanding ended with an avalanche of trouble for the Diamondbacks.
Benches cleared and bullpens emptied after D-backs center fielder Chris Young was buzzed by a high-and-tight fastball in the top of the eighth inning Friday night. After order was restored, the real damage in the Padres' eventual 7-1 victory began.
It started when D-backs...
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Daniel Hudson pitched eight strong innings and Paul Goldschmidt homered, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.
The Diamondbacks, who have scored two runs or fewer in three of their last four games, got an assist from San Diego reliever Joe Thatcher, who balked in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
Two pieces of business we need to address. First off, we won! After a dismal road trip, the Padres returned home to put a hurtin' on the Diamondbacks. We were actually able to put a crooked number on the board late in the game. That's something we haven't done all too often. The other piece is Johan Santana. Remember how nasty he was when we faced him last week? Yeah...
