Darrell Wallace, Jr. returned to the site of his impressive Nationwide Series debut in May when he qualified eighth and finished ninth at Iowa Speedway’s spring race.

Wallace set the goal of improving on those efforts Saturday night and accomplished just that when he nearly captured the pole with a second-best qualifying effort.

He took advantage of starting on the front row as he raced his way around pole sitter Elliott Sadler to lead the first lap and then went on to lead the next 36 circuits around Iowa Speedway.

Wallace would deal with loose conditions throughout the night especially on the entry into the turns, but crew chief Adam Stevens would call for adjustments each time down pit road in an effort to make the car turn better.

A pit stop under caution on lap 91 would cost Wallace track position as he had to restart from the 16th position. He was able to race his way back toward the top-10 over the next run, but unfortunately an issue with the rear tire on the final stop of the night would cost several more spots.

Wallace would restart 15th for the final time of the night, but was impressive over the final 50-plus laps as he drove his way back into the top-10 and raced hard to the line to claim a strong seventh-place effort.

Darrell Wallace Jr.’s Post Race Thoughts: “I learned a lot this weekend. I think I got out too hot right there at the beginning and kind of used the tires up. It was really cool to lead the first lap. I don’t know if he (Elliott Sadler) gave it to me or I took it away from him, but that was fun there. Glad he got the win. I definitely learned a lot from just running in the pack. I know our car wasn’t that great on restarts and that’s where we lost all of our track position. We could have tightened it up a little bit more on that last run, and I think we could have got a shot for running at least top-five, but definitely better tonight. I’m very thankful to Joe Gibbs Racing for giving me this opportunity and a big thanks to Z-Line Designs for being a dedicated partner to the JGR program. I’m looking forward to getting back in a Nationwide Series car with these guys very soon.”
