In a bit of a shocking move on the day before the Broncos open up their season vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, the Broncos have released their top backup quarterback in Caleb Hanie in order to clear room for DT Sealver Siliga, who was previously on Denver's practice squad.

There are numerous reasons for this transaction. One, the Broncos save money by cutting Hanie before the first regular season game. If Hanie had been on Denver's roster tomorrow night, his contract would have been guaranteed. The Broncos end up saving $1 million in base salary and $250,000 in roster bonuses from the release of Hanie.

Secondly, the Broncos are probably thinking they need all of the help they can get up front, and with a defensive line that has a lot of young players up front in the defensive line rotation, such as rookies Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson, by bringing in Siliga for this game, they hope to maximize their line's depth as much as possible.

Thirdly, the Broncos can simply re-sign Hanie to a smaller contract, cap-wise, next week, or in the coming weeks. The Broncos did something similar to this back in 2004, when they released QB Matt Mauck before the season-opener vs. Kansas City. They would go on to re-sign him in the next week, as he would serve as the third-string quarterback for the rest of the season.
