Not one of those jumping grabs at the track on a ball that would have pretty clearly only bounced off the wall, but most people still claim was a robbed home run; this is a legitimate home run ball taken away by Jim Leyland's favorite little leaguer, Donald Kelly. Kelly's 155-pound frame was then boss-tossed to the ground by Comerica Park's bendy bully fence.   GIF via Walkoff Woodward

Game 2013.10: Tigers at A’s

Yes, the game post picture is a mite creepy. But then again, it is a 10:00 pm EST game, and creepiness is thematically apt. Whenever the Tigers play at Oakland, there are three unavoidable questions that come to mind: 1) Will anyone stay up late enough to watch? 2) Who named O.co Coliseum, and how much would it cost to rename it? And what civil or criminal remedies are available...

Detroit Tigers offering bacon on a stick and deep fried peanuts

Hey, remember the days when all you had to choose from in the concession stand was a hot dog, popcorn, and/or Coke?Yeah, those days are long gone.Major League Baseball stadiums have significantly increased their menu items in recent years in an effort to appease even the pickiest of its fans. For the Detroit Tigers, this meant adding a plethora of new food to its Comerica Park selections...

Tigers great Willie Horton tells his '42' story

DETROIT Willie Horton was 4 years old when Jackie Robinson broke baseballs color barrier in 1947. Horton was the youngest of 21 children in a coal-mining family in Arno, Va., and remembers his father, James, boarding a bus with some friends for a trip to see Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers play the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field. Papa would tell me all about Jackie, Horton...

Tigers use small ball to take series from Jays

DETROIT They were the Go-Go Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers leading the majors with a .313 batting average can club teams into submission with Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez. But they beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 11-1, with 14 singles, one double and one triple. They won by Cabrera stealing third and hitting his first triple since 2010. They...

Going...Going...Not Gone: Catch of the Day by Detroit Tigers Utility Man Don Kelly

It was a banner day for the Detroit Tigers. They won the game over the Blue Jays, 7-3. Newcomer TOri Hunter had his 2000th hit of his career. Miguel Cabrera couldn't miss; he went 4-5 with a home run and 4 RBIs. However, as impressive as their play was my play of the day has to go to Don Kelly. If you said who that's okay. Every team has a guy like Kelly. He'...

Will there ever be a right time to trade Miguel Cabrera?

The Detroit Tigers are sitting pretty well in terms of how their immense payroll is structured. Sure they have a $150M payroll, 5th highest in the Major Leagues, but they have a clear two-year window to win a championship. That includes the 2013 season, and 2014 as well. After that,  a high payroll and aging [...]

Was Don Kelly's web gem better than that of Brandon Phillips?

Detroit Tigers left fielder Don Kelly made an outstanding leaping grab at the wall, but was it better than the web gem Brandon Phillips gave us?

Jose Valverde confident, wrong about last season

Jose Valverde threw an inning for the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Friday. In his first game since signing a minor league deal, Valverde threw half of his pitches for balls and put a runner on. He also struck out a batter and did not give up any runs.   After the outing, Valverde spoke to the media [quotes via The Detroit News]:  "You have to have confidence," said...

Tigers Bullpen Woes Continue, and Help Isn’t on the Way

The Tigers bullpen has been awful so far this year. So awful, that it has cost the Tigers two wins so far. The bad news is that there isn’t help on the way. Trades for bullpen pitchers don’t happen before the middle of May, and the free agent market is bare of guys that can help you quickly. The farm system isn’t full of exciting prospects either. This may be a long year in...

Bullpen fails Tigers in 8-6 loss to Blue Jays

DETROIT -- It was a dangerous day for pitchers in general and a pretty tough one for the Tigers' bullpen. Pitchers were getting hit -- literally. Those that weren't couldn't seem to find the plate. Toronto starter Mark Buehrle was hit on the foot on a double-play ball by Alex Avila in the second inning, but remained in the game. Detroit reliever Darin Downs managed...

Denard Robinson's first pitch at Tigers game

Denard Robinson threw out the first pitch at Tuesday's Tigers game -- and it was terrible. The ball traveled maybe 45 feet out of sympathy and bounced the rest of the way into Drew Smyly's glove. Honestly, it looked more like a spike than a toss.  You be the judge:  Lucky for us, an anonymous NFL scout broke it down:  11W: So, with an arm like that, what...

Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1

Miguel Cabrera set the tone in the first inning, stealing third before the opposing pitcher even started his motion. On a chilly day when the ball didn't appear to be carrying, the Detroit Tigers kept their legs moving. Cabrera tripled and scored twice, and the Tigers knocked Josh Johnson out of the game with a five-run second inning en route to an 11-1 victory over the Toronto...

Matt Tuiasosopo’s path back to the major leagues

Matt Tuiasosopo was an infielder and outfielder drafted in the 2004 draft by the Seattle Mariners. His father Manu and brother Marcus both played in the NFL. Within four years, he was up as a September call up for the Mariners. 2008 was his first season in AAA (.281, 13, 73). He spent 2009 in AAA as well (.261, 11, 35) while missing some time due to injury. His injury problems continued...

Dave Dombrowski still talking closer

Despite signing Jose Valverde to a minor league contract and him lighting it up in extended spring training work… Ok the big potato threw a scoreless inning today against the Atlanta Braves were he walked one and struck out one in what sounds like vintage Valverde fashion. Anways… aside from Valverde, Bruce Rondon in Toledo and a struggling Tigers bullpen thus far it sounds as...
