When looking at ways to slow down the Miami Heat a typical solution from NBA coaches this season has been to throw a zone defence at them. The logic is easy to see because few defenders can handle LeBron James or Dwyane Wade one-on-one, so it’s a way to jam the paint, take away easy looks and limit their ability to use their athleticism. Last night the Dallas Mavericks went prolonged stretches using a zone with mixed results. They got torched in the first half as Miami shot close to 60% from the field. In the second half Dallas’ zone defence worked to perfection as they held to Miami to shooting 29% from the field. It’s easy to draw the conclusion that Toronto would do the same tonight when they have had so much luck with their various zone looks this season. Heck, even Miami’s head coach expected as much. “We can definitely expect to see zone,” Erik Spoelstra admitted during his pre-game media scrum.
