Brandon Crawford had three hits and an RBI, leading a San Francisco Giants split squad to a 6-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. The Padres hoped starter Andrew Cashner would get into the fourth inning with less that 40 pitches, but he didn't make it through the third - he threw 31 pitches in the first. But Cashner only gave up one run on three hits. He struck out four in his second start of spring training. Giants starter Chad Gaudin pitched three innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. He had two strike outs. Left fielder Gregor Blanco had two hits, including a perfectly placed bunt single. Padres catcher John Baker also had two hits. The Giants other squad played a 0-0, 10-inning ties against Milwaukee.

SF Giants Rumors: Santiago Casilla, Pablo Sandoval, Jose Mijares and Hector Sanchez

Last night the World Baseball Classic came to an end, as Santiago Casilla and the Dominican Republic beat Angel Pagan and Team Puerto Rico in the championship. SF Giants Rumors would like to congratulate Team Dominican Republic! Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com says (via Twitter) San Francisco Giants trainer Dave Groeschner said Pablo Sandoval had an MRI that showed same bone spur...

SF Giants Rumors: Buster Posey Mega Deal Talks, Ryan Theriot Could Hang up Spikes, Chone Figgins An Option

Credit: Steven Robles – SF Giants Rumors Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants and Buster Posey have quietly begun talks about a possible Mega-Deal. Heyman points out that Posey would like a 10-year deal, and it’s not unreasonable since Posey is only 25, and would be 35 when the contract would end. It could be a big risk to give a catcher a long deal, but...

Will Timmy be a Giant in 2014?

Many Giants fans feel that Tim Lincecum is a ticking time bomb. After exploding onto the MLB stage by winning back-to-back Cy Young awards in 2008-09, the Freak imploded last season, going 10-15 with a hefty 5.18 ERA. That has left many of us to ponder the question, “Have we seen the best of Timmy?” Giants execs have been reluctant to sign Lincecum (2 years, $40.5 million) to...

Pablo Sandoval update: 3B has bone spurs in elbow

Pablo Sandoval's nerve irritation could be the result of bone spurs in his elbow.  He underwent an MRI that ruled out any major structural damage says Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area, but the San Francisco Giants will be cautious with him.  The team is still optimistic about Sandoval's chances at being ready for Opening Day. Sandoval was recently diagnosed with ulnar...

Q&A: Jedd Gyorko, Padres 2B

Jedd Gyorko is ready to take over as San Diego’s regular second baseman. He’s also prepared to fill in at third base, the position he’s played since being taken in the second round of the 2010 draft. With Chase Headley now on the disabled list, Gyorko (pronounced JER-ko) could play one of the positions on opening day. Gyorko can swing the bat: The 24-year-old right-handed...

2013 season preview: San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres looked like they'd be a dumpster fire over the course of the 2012 season in the first half of the year. They just didn't look like a good team at all. Then, something happened: the Padres improved tremendously in the second half, and finished with a respectable (if not overly great) 76-86 record thanks to finshing nine games over .500 in the second half...

2013 burning question: San Diego Padres

Continuing from our season preview of the Padres earlier today... Can the Padres keep their heads above water without Chase Headley and Yasmani Grandal to start the year? Not having Headley and Grandal to start the year is huge for the Padres. Headley will likely end up missing most of April after breaking his thumb, while Grandal won't be back with the team until the...

You may say I'm a dreamer: San Diego Padres

What else can baseball fans do in January but dream of October? In You May Say I'm a Dreamer, the Outside Corner staff will imagine the route to a World Series in 2013 title for all 30 teams. The cool thing about streaks is that they'll eventually end. In their 45th season of existence, the San Diego Padres ended their streak of season without a World Series championship...

Player Profile #27: Buster Posey | C/1B | SF

Buster Posey‘s second half last year was absolutely ridiculous: 71 G, .385 BA, 43 R, 14 HR, and 60 RBI. Putting up numbers like that in the second half will generate  lot of hype going into the following year. When that same player has won Rookie of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, an [...]

Contrasting trade values: Chase Headley and Matt Garza

Both Matt Garza and Chase Headley could start the 2013 season on the disabled list.  In most seasons, this would simply be an unfortunate setback for their respective teams.  In 2013, though, the injuries could affect more than individual stats and team performance.  The injuries could affect trade value. The Chicago Cubs have been active in their attempts to deal Matt Garza...

Rockies 10, Giants 4

Matt Cain wasn't so worried about the runs. It was a lack of command that bothered him. The Giants' opening day starter gave up four runs and seven hits, one a two-run homer to Willin Rosario, and the Colorado Rockies went on to beat San Francisco 10-4 Thursday night. ''My stuff was fine, but I made some bad mistakes, location-wise,'' Cain said despite not...

Padres 6, Diamondbacks 2

Eric Stults pitched six solid innings for his best outing of spring training and hit a two-run single, leading the San Diego Padres to a 6-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Stults, a left-hander who is projected for a spot in the Padres' rotation, gave up four hits. He yielded just one hit in the first four innings before the Diamondbacks rallied in the fifth....

Daily Friar 3.20.13

Let me start off this morning by saying congratulations to the Dominican Republic on winning this year’s World Baseball Classic. This is the first time that Japan has not won the competition as Puerto Rico knocked them off in the previous round. What was amazing about the DR is that they won this thing undefeated. All the way from game one they hadn’t been beat at all, and they...
