When Fighting Illini football coach Tim Beckman was hired, he knew immediately some of the assistants he wanted to join him. One of the first coaches he contacted was Billy Gonzales, with whom he had worked previously. Gonzales had earned the right to become an offensive coordinator through previous experiences and was eager to begin his Illini career.

Juniors Watch Day 3 UI Football Practice

Saturday was a special day for the Fighting Illini football players and coaches. It was a first chance to work in full pads and do some hitting on a bright, sunny day. In addition, it gave a handsome group of junior prospects a chance to check out the school. Around 150 prospects watched practice and toured the facilities. Among the large contingent of Junior Day visitors Saturday was a promising athlete from Ohio. Darron Lee was happy to receive a Fighting Illini scholarship offer afterward. It appears he may witness Illini offensive and defensive coaches fighting over which side of the ball they play him should he attend Illinois. He has potential at multiple positions.

Safety Prospect Likes Visit, Receives Offer

Three Detroit Cass Tech football stars were offered scholarships by the Fighting Illini coaching staff after their visits to campus Saturday. Among them was safety Delano Hill. Like his teammates, Hill had a good time for Junior Day and appreciates the offer.
