Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Mets will recall LHP Josh Edgin from AAA to replace Robert Carson on the roster. The fact that Edgin is coming back to the big leagues makes no sense whatsoever. In Las Vegas, Edgin put up a 5.91 ERA and in AA Binghamton he put up a 7.88 ERA. In the minors this year, he has a WHIP of 1.661. Edgin is a guy who dominated the minors as recently as last year and was also a quality major league arm in 2012. He was sent to the minors for the same reason as Ike Davis, to fix what was wrong with him. The Mets saw what Edgin could do back in 2012, and sent him back to the minors to rediscover himself. So, by calling Edgin back up with his terrible numbers, his trip to the minors was useless. Furthermore, this sends a false message to Ike Davis, who was also sent to the minors to rediscover himself. If Ike goes to Vegas and continues to hit .160, will the Mets just call him back up again too? A pitcher who had an ERA near 8 in AA will most likely struggle in the majors, it’s simple. That being said, instead of recalling Edgin, why wouldn’t the Mets call up a guy such as Jack Leathersich from AA? In 29IP in AA this year, Leathersich has an ERA of 1.55 with 55 strikeouts. That is simply dominant. He should be the one getting a shot in New York and as Yasiel Puig showed, the AA to MLB transition is very possible. The Mets need to make players earn their spots in New York, not just give it to them. The most deserving players should be the ones who get the opportunities. Edgin being back in New York and Leathersich staying in Binghamton is sending a bad message to Mets fans and players. Photo Credit: Michael Baron
