Boston Sports Then & Now:
The Boston Celtics continue to get bit by the injury bug as Leandro Barbosa tore his left ACL.
The Boston Celtics roster continues to be decimated by injuries. Leandro Barbosa injured his knee as he was attempting to drive to the basket on Charlotte Bobcats guard Ramon Sessions. The play occurred late in the third quarter of the Celtics’ 94-91 loss to the Bobcats on Monday night. Barbosa had to be carried off the court by trainer Ed Lacerte and Fab Melo.
Barbosa was officially declared out for the season with a torn left ACL earlier today. While Barbosa’s minutes had been sporadic, his role expanded after Rajon Rondo suffered a torn right ACL in the January 25th loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
In the previous five games, Barbosa was averaging 9 points and 2.6 assists. He came up with a big effort in the Celtics’ 99-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors as he poured in 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Celtics come back from a 10-point deficit.
The 30-year-old likes to use his speed to get past initial defenders when he penetrates to the basket. His scoring was integral off the bench for the Celtics. The coaching staff was utilizing Barbosa’s speed on the defensive end. He was shooting 43% from the floor, including 38.3% from beyond the arc.
Currently, the Celtics have just Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, and Jason Terry in the backcourt. Now, they have just 10 (including Melo) active players on the roster. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports tweeted that Shelvin Mack’s a stopgap possibility, but Delonte West is not. Basketball fans know Mack was the point guard of the Butler University teams that advanced to consecutive National Championship games. Mack has limited experience in the NBA with the Washington Wizards when he played in 64 games in the 2011-’12 season. He also played in 7 games for the Wizards this year before he was waived. Then he was picked up by the Philadelphia 76ers and saw action in just four contests. The 6-foot-3-inch guard is a D-League All-Star with the Maine Red Claws this year. West is not a possibility because of his past issues and the team was not fond of West’s last stint with the team in the 2010-’11 season.
CSNNE’s Jessica Camerato listed a few other guards from the NBDL’s Red Claws. These guards are Micah Downs, Xavier Silas, and Andre Barrett. Celtics fans recognize Downs because he was invited to Celtics training camp. Downs is also a D-League All-Star and he will take part in the Three-Point Shooting Contest as he is hitting 39.5% from beyond the arc. Barrett has also seen time on the court with several NBA teams. Silas spent time with the 76ers last April before he was waived in October.
There are always possibilities for trades, especially with the trade deadline just nine days away. It is unlikely that Keyon Dooling will come back considering the team could’ve brought him in after Rondo was lost for the season. Dooling would need at least two weeks to get into playing condition.
The Celtics have run into a string of bad luck over the past few weeks. They seemed to be handling it well by posting a string of consecutive wins, but now they have to rely on aging veterans and an increasingly depleted roster.

Last week Kevin Garnett became the first player in NBA history to accumulate 25,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 5,000 assists, 1,500 steals and 1,500 blocks, a feat that shows his incredible all-around play since entering the league in 1995. With that said, it's not a shock to see Garnett hit another ridiculous milestone last night as he passed Sleepy Floyd for 50th on the NBA...
Paul Pierce wasn't picked as a reserve for the 2013 All-Star game, nor was he picked as a replacement to fill Rajon Rondo's vacant spot. This despite the fact that Pierce's numbers are remarkably similar to his his stats in previous All-Star seasons. Pierce has been on fire lately (A couple huge triple doubles included) and it appears there might be an All-Star roster...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
“All three of them are real blows to us,” said Ainge. “First of all, we lose our star player and then Jared and then Barbosa. That’s devastating. We’re short on guards now, and we have to bring someone...
Paul Pierce is just awesome at life. Not only is the guy one of the greatest Celtics of all time, but now he is also helping out his fellow Celtic fans in the love department. "Pierce tweeted his gift suggestion, a “Celeb Call” from none other than himself."
Valentines Day is an awkward holiday. Guys feel a lot of pressure to go all out because those are the expectations...
BOSTON — Maybe it was a slip of the tongue or a subtly placed hint, but Kevin Garnett left quite a few reporters scratching their heads on Wednesday.
After the Celtics closed out the first half of the regular season with a victory over the Bulls, Garnett talked about the fatigue he felt after playing three games in four days and how the Celtics have managed to win eight of their...
The worst-case scenario for Leandro Barbosa‘s knee appears to have been confirmed. The Celtics guard, who came up lame during Monday’s loss in Charlotte, reportedly has torn the ACL in his left knee. Such an injury would end his season.
Kevin Garnett told reporters in the locker room after the game that the team was informed Barbosa would join Rajon Rondo and Jared Sullinger...
Kevin Garnett grinned when he was told on Sunday that teammate Jason Terry was amazed at what Garnett was able to do on a basketball court “at 50 years old.”
Garnett, who is actually only 36, shot back.
“Jet’s no spring chicken, either,” he said.
Garnett and Terry are two of the NBA’s oldies but goodies. Along with Paul Pierce, another player performing at an All-Star...
The Celtics finally broke through and have their second longest winning streak by beating the Denver Nuggets last night. It took 3OT's but they prevailed in the end, with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett leading the team. Winning without Rondo seems to have lifted a burden off of these Celtics. As a result, No. 9's run of being the face of the franchise may be over.
Earlier this morning we noted that folks continue to drop the n-word way too easily and what does The Big Lead come up with? Kevin Garnett dropping the word on a local broadcast last...

The Boston Celtics can't catch a break. They lost their star point guard, Rajon Rondo, to a torn ACL. Now, as the team has found a way to continue winning, they have lost another guard to a knee injury. Leandro Barbosa went down after driving to the basket and making a pivot move. According to A. Sherrod Blakey of CSN Boston, the injury is likely season-ending. Barbosa...
What a game yesterday. Behind Truth’s triple-double, Terry’s big plays and KG’s clutch shots, the C’s outlasted Denver in triple OT 118-114. Celtics flew to Charlotte on Sunday night to get ready for the second half of their back to back. Tip-off vs the Bobcats is at 7pm EST tonight.
Check out a slew of photos & GIFs from what was easily one of the most exciting games...
The Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats battled it out at the Time Warner Cable Center in a back and forth battle all night. Bobcats snapped their 7 game losing streak in the win tonight, which also happened to snap the Celtics win streak. The second game of a back to back is killer, never mind when it’s a triple overtime game.
This was your classic old, tired basketball team...
Bobcats fans seem like a decent bunch. They are sticking with their team through all the lean years, which says a lot. They also felt bad when Barbosa went down unlike several other teams whose fans would be cheering (or wishing for) an injury on the Celtics. While I hate to lose any game, this one wasn't too bad. They were competitive right to the end in spite of...
