Michael Strahan will be the new co-host on Live! --the morning talk show with Kelly Ripa.

He may not have that Regis “speak-yell” thing that many a comedian has lovingly mimicked, but Strahan does have “gap” appeal. That toothy grin and easy-going personality of his might just make him a genuine crossover hit.

Strahan may very well become the most popular retired football player of our generation.

I realize that is a big statement, but who else will have the crossover clout of Michael? Just take a look at the current crop of retired NFL’ers

There are a few who do national ad campaigns and film and TV cameos. However, arguably the best cameo by a popular player of this generation happened fourteen years ago when Brett Favre appeared in There’s Something About Mary. That’s a long time ago.

Favre, a very popular player while in uniform, has gone the route of youth coach and remember, he did have a tiny snafu with his public image a few years back. Though maybe he could do ads promoting the clarity of camera phones.

Most retired football players are sports analysts and while being a sports analyst certainly puts you in the spotlight, it is a very narrow beam. The light on Strahan, however, will shine broad and bright.

Millions of stay-at-home moms and dads, retirees, and hung-over college students will be watching every weekday morning to see how Strahan and Ripa bounce off each other while interviewing the guests of the show.

That show will definitely test his trademark-able chops (I want to trademark that phrase). From the über popular likes of Justin Bieber to the winners of the best tasting jam contests, Strahan will have plenty of awkward moments to fill.

Just keep those boysenberry seeds out of your teeth, Michael, and you should be fine.
