From Sportress of Blogitude:

During ESPN’s broadcast of a high school football game between Alabama schools Spanish Fort and Daphne, fans of Spanish Fort were spotted waving a banner. Unfortunately for anyone watching, the banner contained a homophobic insult directed at the team colors of the school’s opponent.

Making light of Daphne’s purple uniforms, Spanish Fort fans held up a banner that read: “Purple? Man, that’s GAY.”

Classy. It didn’t end there, either. Folks supporting Spanish Fort also had another sign at the game, making light of the fact that the rival school’s name, Daphne, also happens to be used a girl’s name:

Wow. Total burn. Well played, everyone.

Of course, not really well played at all. The lesson here should be: don’t bring homophobic signs to high school football games, people.

  • Eh, that's not homophobic. Phobia = a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.
Homophobia = unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality.
This is insulting, derogatory, and slightly bigoted, but it was, after all, just a joke. People need to quit being such babies.
  • I have heard such stupid things, but this one takes the cake. What i read first was bout the boy who can not wear Payton's jersey cuz it has the number 18 on it?Well,it seemd to me that the gangs are like the gays, trying and wanting to take over everything and we just sit back and let them do it.Now bout the sign made regarding the school color of their uniforms and the name of their school. The Balimore Raven colors are PURPLE and black and they are a pro.football team, for the name of their school,it was named that a very long time ago,and so it goes that kids can be cruel and putting a label on things that only causes grief for others.Gay means being happy, lezies mean nothing ,just another stupid label. So,people,we need take control and get back to normal,no gangs, have them go back in the closet, and teach our children the right things, like it was when i grew up,i am 62 and i do not regret the way the world was when i was growing up,we had morals and RESPECT.
  • Hey, I am a homophob, as those people will not leave us a lone, the attack the boy scouts, Aids, Marriage, Churches, Government. They attack when they should be in the closet.

That is where I keep my moral assaults .
  • It amazes me that people don't think Jesus was gay. He never had a girlfriend, nowhere in the bible does it say he ever tried to get some cooter, he goes to the beach and wants 12 guys to leave with him, he knew he was going to die so he had one last dinner party and invited guys only, he wants all men to "kneel down before him", and if you say Jesus backwards it is sounds like "sausage". If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.... you can probably make duck l'orange out of it.
  • So does that make all male teams gay because the coach is male and slaps on the butt. They all shower together, huddle together, travel together, etc? And that would be the same for all female players making them lesbians for following the same activities as above?
    Give me a break.
  • The people who questions others sexually are usually the ones hiding theirs. As you said, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush made the media rounds on Tuesday. In hindsight, that may have been a bad idea.
