Richmond, VA- With less than 10 laps to go it was looking like Joey Logano would be on the outside looking in for the 2013 NASCAR Chase for the Cup. He was two laps down and buried deep in the field in 25th with only one more car in front of him on his lap. That meant if the race went caution free the best he could possibly finish was 24th. At that point Jeff Gordon was running eighth, putting him in the Chase by two points and knocking Logano out of the top 10. To make matters worse for Logano Ryan Newman passed Carl Edwards for the lead in Turn 1 with 10 laps-to-go. With it looking like Newman was on his way to his second victory of the season Logano would be out of the Chase. Luckily for Logano Clint Bowyer spun coming off Turn 4 with seven laps-to-go bringing out the final caution of the evening. The leaders all pit with six to go while Logano stayed out giving one of his two laps back. On the restart with three laps-to-go Logano was able to pass three cars, while Gordon who restarted ninth only could get by one car. Newman had a bad final pit stop, and after restarting fifth could only make his way up to third. When the checkered flew Logano finished 22nd while Gordon came home eight and Newman third. That was enough for Logano to make it in the Chase for the first time in his career. What a lucky break for the youngster as he’s the only Penske driver to make this year’s Chase. Teammate and defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski is winless and on the outside looking in at the 12-car field. At the end of the night, Logano is the luckiest guy leaving Richmond.
