Joliet, IL- First off I want to say NASCAR has done a great job in not turning their heads the other way after the shenanigans that took place in the Federated Auto Parts 400 at the Richmond International Raceway Saturday night. They put the axe on Michael Waltrip Racing in fining them $300k, placing all three crew chiefs on probation through the end of the year, suspending Ty Norris indefinitely and docking all three cars 50 points each. That unprecedented move took Martin Truex Jr. out of the Chase, which he didn’t deserve to be in because MWR cheated to get him in, and added Ryan Newman in his place. I agree with all of that but they didn’t come down hard enough on Clint Bowyer, in my opinion. Then today they made the tough decision to add another car to the normal 12-car Chase field by putting Jeff Gordon back into the Chase. I fully agree with that decision and the reasons for doing so. NASCAR said Gordon was treated unfairly in that he earned his way in but due to cheating by other teams was originally left out. They did the right thing but putting Gordon and Newman in, but my question is: Why didn’t Joey Logano get bumped out? Logano and his No. 22 Penske Racing team flat out cheated just as bad as MWR. There was plenty of evidence including radio transmissions that them and the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports team had talks of letting Logano by the No. 38 so he could move one spot closer to the Chase. That talk was prior to Bowyer spinning on purpose. Isn’t that just as bad? If all three MWR cars got docked 50 points for altering race results shouldn’t the 22 and 38 had the same punishment? After all, they were put on probation like MWR, so why were they not given the same exact punishment? At the end of the day Bowyer and Logano don’t need to be in the Chase. Those two flat out cheated and were the biggest causes for the issues of what happened in Richmond. Those two and those two alone put a black eye on the sport and yet they now have as much of a shot as anyone to win the title. NASCAR did right by adding the two who were penalized the most by the actions at RIR but only got it half right by keeping Logano and Bowyer in.
