Just a couple of small things over the last few days…
Andrew McCutchen won a Silver Slugger award (which goes to the best hitter at each position, or the three best for outfielders) tonight. Jay Bruce and Ryan Braun joined him in the NL outfield. Cutch is the first Pirate to win a Silver Slugger since Jack Wilson did so in 2004. (Amazingly, Jack Flash has a Silver Slugger to his credit but no Gold Glove).
McCutchen was also named an MVP finalist a few days ago. This is the first year MLB is naming “finalists” for the award, and for MVP there are five (Ryan Braun, Chase Headley, Yadier Molina, and Buster Posey–the overwhelming favorite–are the others). Cutch won’t win the MVP, but is still being deservedly (and in the case of his Gold Glove, undeservedly) honored for his outstanding season.
The Pirates signed outfielder Darren Ford and infielder Jared Goedert to minor league contracts. Both appear to be useful Triple-A players, but both are 27 and have combined for 33 big-league pla...
BEST OF MAXIM
Major League Baseball announced the 2012 Silver Slugger award winners, and Andrew McCutchen was named one of the winners. The award was the first Silver Slugger for McCutchen, and he became the first Pirate to win the award since Jack Wilson in 2004.
McCutchen led the National League in hits with 194, and ranked second in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and...
As Wilbur Miller pointed out today after the Jared Goedert signing, the Pirates have re-signed a few of their players from last year. Baseball America announced some re-signings yesterday, with the key players for the Pirates being Anderson Hernandez and Stefan Welch. Both players were in the organization in 2012. Hernandez had a major league Spring Training invite last year, and...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Bill Livesey as senior adviser to general manager Neal Huntington.
The 72-year-old Livesey worked most recently as a scout with the Yankees from 2008-11, his second stint with the Y team. He also worked with the organization from 1978-95, holding several positions, including vice president of player development and scouting.
The Pirates finished...
The Scottsdale Scorpions lost 4-3 to Mesa today. Adalberto Santos was the only Pirates prospect to play in the game. Santos went 2-for-3 with two walks. He now has a .322/.429/.492 line in 59 at-bats in the AFL, with an 11:9 BB/K ratio. He’s 6-for-12 with two doubles and three walks in his last three games.
It has been awhile since I did a recap of the minor league teams. The last one I did was Bradenton. After that I got all the data together for the Altoona and Indianapolis recaps, then experienced something every blogger has experienced at some point in time. My computer was wiped, I lost the data and the articles, and had no desire to immediately do all the work again. I kept putting...
With the GM Meetings kicking off today, and the Winter Meetings less than a month away, the free agent market should start to pick up. General Manager Neal Huntington is in Florida for the next two days, which gives General Managers the opportunity to meet face to face and be able to start discussing potential trades.
If the Pirates don’t make any moves this offseason, the club...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Bill Livesey to be a Senior Advisor to the General Manager, per a team press release. Livesey, 72, was most recently a professional scout with the New York Yankees from 2008-2011. Prior to that he spent three seasons as a Special Assistant to the General Manager of the New York Mets.
Livesey spent 18 years with the Yankees from 1978-1995, and was...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed infielder Jared Goedert to a minor league deal, according to Ken Rosenthal. Goedert spent seven years in the Cleveland farm system, splitting the 2012 season between Double-A and Triple-A. In Triple-A last year he hit for a .279/.331/.460 line in 326 at-bats with 14 homers. Goedert turns 28 next season, and hasn’t played in the majors yet. He...
Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting is upset about the way his team finished the season, but insists the franchise is heading in the right direction.
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that Bill Livesey has been hired as a Senior Advisor to General Manager
Buried in yesterday's election news, Bob Nutting made an appearance yesterday afternoon to give a vote of semi-confidence to Neal Huntington and his front office for 2013, basically saying that while he was upset by the collapse that he thinks that controversial military-style training needs to be toned down, that he thinks the front office deserves another year to build on the...
Andrew McCutchen is an MVP finalist, as everyone fully expected him to be. At the very worst, McCutchen was the second best player in the National League this year. It's a two man race between him and the Giants' Buster Posey. Now, the Giants had a much better season than the Pirates. Not only did they win their division, they won the World Series. The MVP award is not...
According to John Perrotto, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed outfielder Darren Ford to a minor league deal. Ford has just 16 plate appearances in the majors, with four hits and no extra base hits. The 27-year-old hit for a .273/.326/.385 line in 304 at-bats last year in Triple-A. He had 26 steals in 40 attempts while in Triple-A last year.
