The Washington Redskins are heading into their bye week, but head coach Mike Shanahan might have a hard time motivating his players for the second half of the season. It appears that Shanahan has thrown in the towel on this season, saying the remainder of the year will be used to evaluate the team. Shanahan had proclaimed Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers as a must win and now seems to be looking towards the 2013 season. But, should he be so bold? The Washington Redskins are now 3-6 and in reality, reaching the playoffs at this point would require all the dominoes to fall the right way and the Redskins would likely have to win six of their last seven games. Even a 9-7 record in the tough NFC would not guarantee a wildcard berth. However, it seems to me that publicly announcing that you are throwing in the towel on the season is highly irrational behavior for a head coach at the mid-season mark.
