The problem with a Wild Card race is, and particularly with the Phillies pursuit of a wild card spot right now, is that you have to count on so many things to happen. Most importantly you have to win. Then you have to count on other teams that you’re not playing to lose.

Everyone held up their end of the bargain last night, and the Philadelphia Phillies are suddenly 4 games out. The Phillies held off multiple rallies from the Marlins last night en route to a 9-7 win, their sixth in a row and 14th in their last 18.

While the Phillies are putting together a very strong second half, teams like the Dodgers, Pirates and Cardinals continue to lose. A couple of weeks ago the Phillies were 10 out of the second wild card, now they are in the thick of things.

The Phillies evened their record with 71 wins and 71 losses last night after being 14 games under .500 at their lowest point of this crazy season. That’s right, the Phillies are no longer a losing team.

Something that seemed like a delusion only a week ago is now starting to take sharp focus. This team is determined and not relenting. That is a victory in itself. Many clubs would have flown the white flag if they had to deal with the adversity the Phillies have dealt with this season. The Phillies have soldiered on.

Suddenly, the Phillies are on of those hot teams that everyone worries about in the stretch run. The Phillies have put the NL on notice. They may not win their 6th straight NL East title, but they won’t let go of playoff hopes without a fight.

Baseball in Philadelphia is fun again.
