The University of Louisville informed local media outlets that Rick Pitino will hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM. The release also says that Russ Smith will join Pitino at the media briefing if has made a decision on his future at that point. As I mentioned earlier today, I have no inside source close to Russ Smith, but I’ve maintained for the past week that I believe he’ll return for a senior campaign. Regardless of how loaded next year’s draft is, Russ can definitely improve by playing one more season under Rick Pitino. I just think leaving this year would be a risk. After another year, they’ll be no risk because it’ll be his only option and he can also improve in many ways. There are a few media members who claim to have sources close to the situation that say Russ will announce tomorrow that he’ll return for his senior season. Drew Deener, someone who is connected as anyone with the Louisville basketball program, says two sources have informed him that Russ...

Russ Smith Staying at Louisville

According to Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports, Louisville point guard Russ Smith is going to forego the NBA Draft and return to school. The 6-foot junior guard, who said shortly after the Cardinals won the national championship that he was declaring for the NBA Draft, will come back for his senior season. He made a formal announcement on Wednesday afternoon.  “I love these guys and...

Russ Smith: Should He Stay Or Should He Go?

Why should he stay?  Anyone would be crazy to not have a guy return that was in many Player of the Year conversations.  Louisville needs him.  The incoming class has some good guards and guys who can create, but you never truly know what you are going to get until they get on campus (see UK last season).  So, with that, you would have a great sense of security going into...

Russ Smith Will Return To Louisville For His Senior Season Despite multiple accounts of people (including his own father) saying Russ Smith will go pro, the junior will stay at the University of Louisville for his final year. Pitino spoke first in the press conference and noted several reasons for Smith sticking around: becoming more NBA-ready by creating a better assist/turnover ratio, gaining ten pounds and making better shot...

C.L. Brown of the Courier-Journal is reporting that Florida International assistant coach Mike Balado is the frontrunner to replace Kareem Richardson on the Louisville staff. Many expected Belado to follow the younger...

Smith’s father fueled...

A Closer Look At Louisville’s Future Backcourt

Considering the success of Louisville basketball over the past two seasons, it’s hard to argue that Peyton Siva and Russ Smith aren’t the best backcourt in the history of the program. Next year’s backcourt may not accomplish what Russ Smith and Peyton Siva did, but the crop of guards that Rick Pitino will have are going to be very good. Russ Smith’s decision to stay could...
