Rajon Rondo, the Boston Celtics triple-double machine, is out for the rest of the season. Rondo was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his right knee. The injury occurred last Friday in the Celtics loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
Coach Doc Rivers held off informing the rest of the team on Rondo’s condition until after the Celtics beat the Miami Heat in double overtime on Sunday.
“You can write the obituary; I’m not,” Rivers said. “You can go ahead, but I’m not. We won tonight and so, the way I look at it is, we’re going to stay in there. In my opinion, we’re going nowhere.”
Rivers may be right about the “going nowhere” part. The timing of Rondo’s injury couldn’t be worse as the C’s struggle to hold on to the eight spot in the East’s playoff picture. With Rondo out, and no surgery date yet determined, expect Boston to falter despite whatever heroic efforts aging superstars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce can piece together in the second half of the season.

Boston has always had a history of having at least one future hall-of-fame player on their roster. Now that Pierce and Garnett are at the end of their NBA career, the Celtics as a franchise are looking to remain relevant.
