The Toronto Raptors have continued to revamp their roster for the 2013-14 season by signing the free-agent forward, Austin Daye. The Raptors are keen to build on last season’s relative success when, despite having an overall losing record, they did at least have a winning home record for the first time since 2009. However, they still surprised fans who bet on NBA by finishing at the foot of the Atlantic Division standings, having a 34-48 overall record but a 21-20 record at home. Daye has appeared in 237 regular-season games (24 starts) with Detroit and Memphis averaging 5.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 15.4 minutes. In 55 appearances for the Grizzlies last season, Daye, who was a first-round pick (15th overall) by Detroit in the 2009 NBA Draft, contributed 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds. He left the Pistons and joined the Grizzlies just over six months ago as part of the three-team deal that brought Rudy Gay to Toronto. As well as signing Daye, Toronto have, during the 2013 off-season, traded former 1st overall pick, Andrea Bargnani to the New York Knicks for Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, Quentin Richardson, a first round draft pick, and future 2nd round picks, as well as adding Tyler Hansbrough and Dwight Buycks. The Raptors head coach, Dwane Casey, has also appointed Bill Bayno and Jesse Mermuys to the roles of assistant coaches this summer. In addition, Jama Mahlalela has been promoted to an assistant coach/player development role. The experienced Bayno had been working as an assistant coach to Rick Adelman at Minnesota, having previously enjoyed five seasons in a similar role with Portland. Since being established in 1995, Toronto have struggled to impress NBA betting pundits, and have only reached the play-offs twice in the last decade. Their best recent campaign was in 2006-07 when they had a 47-35 regular season record.
