Finally winning an NCAA Tournament game with the Minnesota Gophers wasn’t enough to save Tubby Smith his job. According to a report from Jeff Goodman at CBS Sports, Smith was fired as head coach of the Gophers after six seasons. Expectations were high when the team hired the National Champion-winning coach, but the results never quite panned out. He ends his Minnesota career with a 124-81 mark, but his Big 10 conference record was a paltry 46-62. Via CBS Sports: Smith made the NCAA tournament in three of his six seasons at Minnesota and was knocked out in the first round in both 2009 and 2010. The team started off 15-1 this season, but lost 12 of its last 18 games and barely made the NCAA tournament as an 11-seed. Smith arrived in 2007 from Kentucky, where the fan base grew frustrated in the latter years of his tenure due to early exits and a lack of success on the recruiting trail. Smith won the national title in 1998 — his first season as a head coach in Lexington. Who will Smith be replaced by? Well, throw Shaka Smart at the top of their choices. They actually may have an [...]

Nelson, Gophers defining their identity

MINNEAPOLIS A year ago, the Gophers began spring football practice to a very clear tune: This is Jerry Kill's team. It was the beginning of the coach's second season in the Twin Cities. He'd recruited a class of players by that point, gotten that first 3-9 season and all the initial kinks of being new and turning a program around out of his system. And it was Jerry...
