Good evening everyone… I just asked Mets general manager Sandy Alderson a question and a follow up during a conference call he conducted with media and bloggers this evening. I wanted to share my questions with you, and I will post his responses later tonight, once I am done transcribing what were some long and well presented responses which I thought were both revealing and very interesting as well. Hi Sandy, thanks for the opportunity… It’s been reported that Kirk Nieuwenhuis will be strongly considered as a leadoff candidate this season despite a 31% strikeout percentage, a low contact rate, and a poor batting eye. Assuming he could improve his contact and strikeout rates a little, his batting eye still is what it is, and he doesn’t fit the mold of an ideal leadoff man even if it’s only against right-handed pitching. What’s troubling is that Kirk was at his worst when he worked deeper into counts – I’m talking 3-2 and 3-1 counts. Are there some positives about Kirk that we don’t ...

Zack Wheeler And The Brewing Of Excitement

The Mets’ first spring telecast from Port St. Lucie was this past Saturday (2/24). This was good news on several fronts. It pointed out that spring – the actual season, spring – is, indeed, on the way, that we here in the chilly Northeast will shortly be freed from this bleak midwinter. It evoked a coming time of short sleeves and short pants, those days of soda and pretzels...

Mets prospect makes great grab to rob HR

Davis homers, Mets suffer first preseason loss to Nats

It took until the Mets’ fourth Spring Training game for the team to finally be outscored, so that’s good. Although New York lost to Washington last night 6-4, there were a number of positives to take away. For one, Wilmer Flores looked comfortable at second base. I wondered earlier this month about the longtime prospect’s future on defense. Based on how they are playing him...

Rafael Montero makes Grapefruit League debut for Mets

New York Mets prospect Rafael Montero made his Grapefruit League debut Thursday afternoon against the Washington Nationals.  The 22-year-old right-hander, who recorded a 2.36 ERA while compiling 110 strikeouts vs. just 19 walks in 122 innings of A ball last year, gave up one run on three hits in two innings of work during his start against Washington. Stephen Strausburg may...

Mets News and Notes: Valdespin in RF?, Murphy Update, Feliciano Update, Wheeler Update, Mets Concerts, Byrdak

Mets News and Notes: Jordany Valdespin, who singled in each of his first two at-bats Thursday and is off to a quick start in the Grapefruit League with a .455 average, will get a look in the outfield soon, Terry Collins said. Daniel Murphy (strained muscle on right side) is about a week from entering Grapefruit League action, at which point Collins plans to look at Valdespin...

The 2012 Mets in the Zone, a Month by Month Breakdown.

I probably wasn’t the only person frustrated last year watching Kirk Nieuwenhuis, or Lucas Duda, or Ike Davis appearing to take fat pitches down the middle of the plate only to see them swing at a breaking pitch in the dirt or a fastball at eye level. On several notable occasions Keith Hernandez himself went off on hitters taking 2-1 fastballs “right down the pike” as he...

Carlos Beltran: Why do fans still hate him?

The New York Mets took a chance nearly two years ago when they traded an established outfielder and clubhouse leader in Carlos Beltran. Beltran, who still ranks in the top ten in several offensive categories in Mets history, has recently stated that their gamble paid off. At the time, the experts proclaimed that the immediate winner in the Wheeler-Beltran deal was the San Francisco...

New York Mets Matt den Dekker robs home run rather impressively (Video)

As MLB spring training is officially underway, we have our first home run robbery to take note of. In the seventh inning of the Mets/Nationals game on Tuesday night, New York outfield prospect Matt Den Dekker took what appeared to be a home run from the Nationals Anthony Rendon: Your browser does not support iframes. It's Spring For The Announcers Too

I wouldn't know Reese Havens if he came up to me and hit me over the head with a baseball bat. That's assuming he wouldn't swing and miss. Although if he hit me, he probably would pull an oblique muscle and miss a month, the poor bastard. Point being: I don't get paid to recognize Reese Havens. And contrary to what you might think, I don't carry a spring training...
