CHICAGO (AP) Chris Sale outpitched James Shields, Tyler Flowers homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 in the season opener on Monday.
The White Sox believe they're in position to make a run at the AL Central title even though they made no splashy additions while the rest of the division loaded up. They're off to a good start after a late fade left them three games behind Detroit a year ago.
A dominant performance by Sale and Flowers' drive leading off the fifth against Shields were just enough to beat a team that's trying to make a big jump after finishing with a losing record 17 of the past 18 seasons. It also gave the White Sox a rare win over the Royals, who took 12 of 18 from them a year ago.
Sale (1-0) showed the form that made him a 17-game winner and an All-Star in his first season as a starter. On a chilly day when the game-time temperature was 44, he allowed just seven hits and struck out seven while walking one, and he left to...
BEST OF MAXIM
The biggest move of the winter took center stage on Opening Day for the Kansas City Royals. No longer a team that is rebuilding, David Glass and company took steps this off-season to become contenders.
The top prospect in the organization was packaged away in order to get the one thing the Royals felt they needed more than anything else: a pitcher that could truly be an ace. In...
Welcome to life after James Shields.
The Tampa Bay Rays still have ace left-hander David Price, of course, but this season will he uncharted terrain of sorts for a pitching staff that led the major leagues with a 3.19 ERA last season.
Shields, a right-hander traded to the Kansas City Royals in December in a blockbuster deal, had become a linchpin of Tampa Bays success on the mound...

The Chicago White Sox will depend on starting pitcher Chris Sale to anchor their rotation in 2013. Tyler Flowers will also need to be a force if the team is to contend. They got both on Monday, winning their opener for the first time since 2005.
A 17 game winner last season, the White Sox got 7 2/3 innings from Sale. In the fifth inning a solo home run off the bat of Flowers gave...
For those that watched Chris Sale dazzle on Opening Day, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. He was clearly riding the wave of his alma mater, Florida Gulf Coast, and their magical run in the NCAA basketball tournament.
That’s not the actual reason, but a possibility. The 24-year-old is coming off a 17-8 season, that featured a 3.05 ERA with 192 strikeouts.
As for 2013...
This was something completely different, in a good way. Between 2000-2012, the Kansas City Royals used nine different Opening Day starters. Six times, that aforementioned starter worked fewer than six innings before getting the heave-ho. Five times, that aforementioned starter surrendered four runs or more.
Between 2000-2012, the Royals Opening Day "aces" averaged just...
Opening Day observations about James Shields, Jon Lester, Mike Moustakas and others.
by John Viril—Here is a detailed look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Royals Opening Day roster for 2013.
Fangraphs.com rated Kansas City’s rotation as 22nd best in baseball. (I highly recommend reading their preview series using multiple projection systems to rank position group...
The sun has set at the Camelback Ranch and what an amazing season its been. Watching from Australia there has not been a much to write about, but that is about to change, when at 6 am Tuesday morning the alarm goes off. OK, I hear you going, “OK, she has lost the plot?” Being hours ahead of the USA it’s the time I have to get up to be able to watch Chris Sale throw...
Just like in 2005, the White Sox opened the season at home, against a division rival, under a 2nd-year manager (Ozzie Guillen, Robin Ventura) and walked away with a 1-0 victory.
Chris Sale tossed 7.2 scoreless innings while allowing 7 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 7 Royals.
After recording the American League's 4th best ERA (3.05) in his breakout 2012 season to...
It took a bit to find the game. After changing on-line streaming sites I finally found the boys. Not much to report through the 5th as its nothing all to this point. Bo Jackson threw out the first pitch. The first double play for the season can go in the record book in the 5th inning at The Cell. Chris Sale is looking relaxed and so far throwing 60 pitches total.Chris kept...
4:30 am in Australia and am waiting for the game to start. The line up is the same as opening day with the only change at pitching, crossing off Chris Sale and inserting Jake Peavy.
Yesterday I got the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros game and it was almost the perfect game for Texas. Not sure how that wound up falling apart in the end but I will get back to you on that...
