Do you remember the 2006 Rose Bowl? That game had it all. Two juggernauts pitted against each other in the National Championship game.Unimaginable hype. Multiple Heisman winners and candidates. It was one of the most perfect football games I have ever seen, and probably will ever see.Watching Vince Young stroll into the end zone was one of the most ecstatic moments of my entire life. And he made it look so easy. Now, here we are in 2013. The Horns just lost to the BYU Cougars 40-21 in the second game of a season that was supposed to be a revival. 500 rushing yards from the BYU squad puts the totally necessary exclamation point on the final score of that game. Surprisingly, Texas Longhorn football tickets have gone up in price rather than down since the loss to BYU; a testament to the spirit of the Texas fan base.Next week, the horns face an Ole Miss team that I refuse to believe is less talented than BYU. What should we as fans expect? We should be expecting a 50-0 wallop by the Longhorns. What I am actually expecting is a close game, and possibly even a loss. This article from BuzzFeed pretty well sums up how I feel as a Longhorns fan right now. Missed recruiting opportunities are the most obvious explanation for this harsh decline. Texas had the chance to land guys like Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel over the past couple of years. Instead, they stuck to guys like Garrett Gilbert, who is now playing for the SMU Mustangs. There is even a recurring twitter joke about the recruiting issue at Texas; "Mack Brown recruited [insert player here] as a safety." This pretty well sums up what the Texas defense has been like for a few years now. Missed tackles have plagued the team.To go from something so incredibly perfect to something so mind-numbingly sloppy is not a fun thing for UT fans. One can only hope that the Horns finally do turn it around, the way they have been telling us they would for the past four years.
