Found March 12, 2012 on Waiting For Next Year:

It was an interesting and eventful weekend in Cleveland sports, even if there were just a few games. I had a few thoughts about what happened that I wanted to share…

Browns

The silver lining in the RGIII to the Redskins mess is the timing. The Browns can now move on and prepare knowing that RGIII is out of the picture. We will likely never know for certain how the Redskins were able to outbid the Browns, and what the Browns were willing to give up to get Griffin. What I am convinced of, is that the Redskins would have always been willing to give up more than the Browns. That being the case, I think the Browns were destined to lose this bidding war.

Now I want you to imagine the scenarios they would have had to gameplan for if the Redskins and Rams waited until the day of the draft to make this move. How many discussions and meetings would have been devoted to the subject? How much time and how many resources would have been wasted if Washington had added the 2014 first rounder while the Rams were on the clock, sealing the deal?

Now every interview and pro day they attend will have a different significance. They can game plan for the 4th and 22nd pick. They can decide what players they think are worth the 4th pick, and under which circumstances they would be willing to trade out of the pick.

They enter into free agency this week with a clearer understanding of where they stand. Fans may not like where they stand, in fact the team may not like where they stand, but it is much better knowing now with time to do something about it.

Cavaliers

I don’t remember ever seeing a player in Cleveland this overlooked.

Antawn Jamison is the team’s leading scorer, just edging out rookie sensation Kyrie Irving. He is the second leading rebounder, behind only Anderson Varejao. Despite his age, he hasn’t missed a game and leads the team in minutes played. It is Jamison that has been keeping the Cavs in games for the first three quarters, before giving way to Kyrie in the fourth.

And that is almost symbolic of what is happening among the fan base.

Everyone knows that he isn’t part of the future of the Cavaliers, no matter how great of a person he is. His contract is up after this year, and the team is looking forward to that cap space, that is if they can’t find a partner to trade with and ship Jamison off for a young player or good draft pick.

Nevermind that the Cavaliers would not have won the last three games without the play of Jamison, or that he averages nearly 26 points a contest in March.

What we tend to remember is the way that Kevin Garnett was able to score at will against the Cavs in the playoffs with Jamison defending. Or the way Chris Bosh does the same when the Heat come to town.

And those are legitimate reasons that Jamison won’t be part of the team when the Cavaliers are ready to contend with those types of teams in the playoffs. But it is strange to see such an integral part of a Cleveland team get virtually no attention or love from the fans.

Report: Browns “not players” for Matt Flynn

According to New Era Scouting’s Matt Miller, the Browns won’t be pursuing Matt Flynn when free agency hits later this afternoon- “Hearing from two sources that #Browns are not players for Matt Flynn. Take it for what’s its worth.” The teams that are ‘in’ on Flynn according to Miller are Seattle and Miami- “More Matt Flynn news, apparently Seattle and Miami are...

Hillis drama continues into free agency

Say this for Peyton Hillis: His saga has been as consistently bizarre this offseason as it was during the 2011 season. The end result: Barring a late surprise, Hillis will test his value on the free agent market before deciding if he wants to return to the Cleveland Browns. Then its up to the Browns to decide if they want him back, how much they want to pay him and whether his...

Report: Peyton Hillis to meet with Steelers

According to a report by Tony Grossi the Steelers are expected to meet with Peyton Hillis today at 4 pm for the start of Free Agency.  Take it for what it is worth.  This would be huge for the Steelers if it is true.  Hillis was a beast before his injury and would fit in perfectly with the Steelers.  He brings a presence of toughness to the offense that we have been lacking....

Browns crawl into free agency

The Cleveland Browns have released starting right tackle Tony Pashos, one of several moves made as NFL free agency opened. The club also tendered wide receiver Jordan Norwood and defensive lineman Brian Schaefering and signed backup offensive lineman John Greco to a contract extension on Tuesday. Punter Richmond McGee, who spent most of last season on injured reserve, was also released...

Free Agent Outlook: LB's and DB's

The Browns invested heavily in CB's Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown, as they have with LB's D'Qwell Jackson and Chris Gocong. With questionable depth, the Browns may not be in position to acquire a starter quality player at the positions of note, and the organization is still sniffing around QB options.

What it really would have cost the Browns to land RG3 in Cleveland

If Robert Griffin III had been coming out last year with the same perceived value as he has entering this year’s draft, and the price would have been the Browns’ 2011 first-rounder (the sixth overall pick) plus the next year’s first-round pick, the trade would have been a no-brainer. Yet when accounting for last year’s draft day trade with the Atlanta Falcons, that’s essentially...

First things first for the Cleveland Browns free agency

A lot of the talk about the Cleveland Browns over the past few days has been about the NFL draft and not getting Robert Griffin III. The only problem is free agency is what the Browns need to be worried about next as it starts on March 13th at 4PM eastern. A large part of what will happen in the NFL draft on April 26th will be dictated by what needs the Cleveland Browns can fill...

For Browns QB spot, desire can’t create opportunity

Regardless of how exactly the process went down this past weekend, the Browns missed their man. What isn’t in question is that the Browns wanted RG3 on the team and he will not be. So like any good co-dependent fanbase, we scour the earth to figure out who we can count on to be the quarterback to take the Browns to the Super Bowl. When one door closes another one opens. Usually...

Cavaliers 118, Rockets 107

Antawn Jamison scored 28 points and rookie Kyrie Irving came through again in the fourth quarter, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 118-107 win over the Houston Rockets on Sunday night. Cleveland, which recorded a season high in points, had six players in double figures in winning its third straight game for the first time this season. Luis Scola scored a season-high 30 points...

Keeping up with the Cavs trade buzz

CLEVELAND -- A few quick notes on the latest involving the Cavaliers: By now youve probably heard the rumor about the Cavs sending forward Antawn Jamison and his expiring contract to New Orleans for center Emeka Okafor and one of the Hornets two first-round picks. It was first mentioned by Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal. Okafor is a serviceable starting center when healthy...
