THERE ARE MANY haunting words that could be applied to Washington State’s 55-21 loss against Arizona State on Halloween at Martin Stadium. But the scariest is the Cougars’ hopes for their first bowl berth in a decade now are in peril. After being dominated in nearly every aspect of the game, WSU (4-5 overall, 2-4 Pac-12) can only lose once more to be eligible for postseason play.

Halftime: House of horrors on Halloween night

On this night, it seemed like fate was playing a trick on the Cougars – and the result was anything but a treat. A defense that once was called stout again was porous during the Cougars’ 55-21 loss Thursday against Arizona State at Martin Stadium. It would be unfair to pin WSU’s setback solely on that side, though. The Cougars (4-5 overall, 2-4 Pac-12) were awful in several aspects of the game.
