USE YOUR BIG GUNS EARLY AND OFTEN

Posted May 20, 2013

THE latest Opinion Poll on the Eagles site is asking about the best way to distribute the ball among the RB's. 58% of fans are saying give it to LeSean McCoy 20-25 times a game.

58%.

It's an overwhelming majority when you see how the other 4 options are broken down, but I still think that number is rather low.

Don't get it twisted, I love having Bryce Brown back there, I still think we have yet to really see Chris Polk's game, and Felix Jones gives us some crazy depth if he sticks; but Shady is one of the most lethal and versatile players in the league. The idea that anyone would make the case that he shouldn't see at least 5 touches per quarter seems weird to me.

I also like the idea of him seeing the ball early and often in games. Running the ball is a dictatorial tactic. When you run the ball, YOU get to set the tone. If you build a lead while running the ball,  you also eat clock that the other team needs to stage a comeback. You leave less time then they have to hurry, the more they hurry the more opportunity for miscues, miscues short circuit comebacks and often lead to turnovers. (The Steelers have more or less LIVED OFF OF THIS since the 1970's).

The deeper the quicksand gets, the more you run. Get it? Eventually all 4 backs could see significant work. But the best way to do that is to use your big guns early and often. Then when the opponent comes back up for air, you whack him in the face with one of the yardsticks, while your big gun cools on the sideline, recharging for next week.
