College Spun/Annie Dunbar
With it still being May, the college basketball buzz has been largely focused on recruitment – which, don’t get me wrong, is interesting, but it doesn’t even compare to the blood pumping excitement fans get from the actual basketball season. To get basketball fans through this down time (and stir up some friendly conversation), Emory Sports Marketing Analytics released a study of the best college basketball fan bases in the country.
The study is based off of a revenue method which attempts to equate the money a program brings in with its on-court performance. So a school that brings in tons of cash and produces a loser (Arkansas) could still actually wind up on this list.
(Before reading any further, if you’re a Kentucky fan, you might want to take a seat.)
Here are the top 10 best college basketball fan bases, according to the study:
1. Louisville2. Arizona3. Duke4. Arkansas 5. North Carolina6. Texas7. Kentucky8. Syracuse 9. Marquette 10. Oklahoma State
I know what you’re thinking. Louisville is the most recent NCAA champion, so of course it’s No. 1. Well, think again. Not only were these rankings done prior to this past season, this study has been done over the past 10 years. If this doesn’t spark either excitement or anger for the highly anticipated upcoming basketball season, I don’t know what will.
Do you agree with the top 10 best fan bases?
