According to doctors, David Wright suffered a strained intercostal muscle in his rib cage while carrying the country on his back playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and will be re-evaluated after three to five days rest. Manager Terry Collins is not optimistic about Wright’s chances of playing on opening day, citing a similar injury sustained by Daniel Murphy in February, which he has yet to fully recover from. Collins noted that the team will look internally for options to fill the void at third base.  Leading candidates include Zach Lutz, Brian Bixler, Brandon Hicks and Justin Turner, who is battling his own injury problems. Perhaps the most intriguing option of the bunch is Lutz (if by intriguing, we mean the one that can hit). All jokes aside, Lutz may be the Mets’ best option as a replacement for Wright.  Already 26 years old, Lutz has been posting gaudy numbers at AAA over the past few seasons. Last year Lutz hit at a .299/.410/.496 mark in 72 games at Bu...

David Wright says goal is to play opening day

New York Mets third baseman David Wright was forced from World Baseball Classic play this past week when he felt a soreness in his rib cage.  Wright admitted the injury had been bothering him for about a week leading up to the team’s contest with the Dominican Republic.  He was eventually sent to New York where he was diagnosed with a moderate intercostal strain, thereby ending...

Mets News: Wright Unsure He’ll Be Ready For Opening Day, Has No Regrets

Updated 3/17 As I feared, David Wright rejoined the Mets this morning and uttered the words I was hoping I wouldn’t have to hear. Regarding whether he will be ready to play by Opening Day, Wright had this to say: “That’s looking to predict the future, and I can’t do that, and I won’t do that, because it’s the first day I’ve been back in camp.” “So I don’t know...

David Wright Forced to Leave Team USA

Captain America one day, a Mets third baseman the next. Wright is on his way to New York to see doctors, so his World Baseball Classic run is over. Wright was tearing it up at the WBC, he was batting .438, and led the team with 10 RBI’s. David told reporters that the injury had bothered him for about a week, and the Mets were aware of the issue. He was pulled from the lineup...

Justin Turner Playing Third Today, Reactions From NY Media On David Wright

Here are some reactions from beat writers, journalists, Terry Collins and GM Sandy Alderson regarding the latest news on David Wright who was diagnosed by team doctors with a moderate intercostal strain. Wright started experiencing discomfort near his rib cage about a week ago. He played in the WBC anyway, putting up huge numbers and earning the nickname “Captain America” for...

Over Half Mets’ Payroll Could Be On DL Opening Day

According to the Mets’ timetable, today could greatly determine the make-up of their Opening Day roster and line-up, which probably won’t resemble anything you imagined a month ago. Not even close. WRIGHT: Will we know more today? The Mets hope to know more today of the status of third baseman David Wright and second baseman Daniel Murphy, both of whom have strained intercostal...

Mets’ Injury Updates And Today’s Batting Order

The Mets can realistically expect to have three, perhaps four, significant players open the season on the disabled list: David Wright, Johan Santana, Frank Francisco and possibly Daniel Murphy. Murphy remains sore after playing five innings of defense in a minor league game last Friday. Terry Collins said to expect him to play no sooner than Wednesday, and if he’s not playing by...

Schmidt: Team USA needs to go 'all in' to win WBC

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By MIKE SCHMIDT For The Associated Press Captain America used to be Derek Jeter. Now it's David Wright, and he had been the star for Team USA until a rib strain ended his stay in the World Baseball Classic. Wright said he could have played, but the New York Mets said no and demanded he go for tests. That is normal procedure, as Team USA is forced to honor...

Wright, Santana, Murphy And Duda Among Mets’ Questions As Opening Day Looms

Here we are, two weeks from Opening Day and the Mets still have a myriad of questions that can’t be answered by Google. Perhaps they should get a Celebrity Apprentice from Trump to fill in the holes. Jonathan Niese was superb in yesterday’s loss to the Braves and we know he’ll get the ball that first day against San Diego regardless of the Mets’ refusal to acknowledge anything...

Justin Turner Taking Over Third Base; Mets Lineup Against Marlins

If there was any doubt of Justin Turner making the Opening Day roster, that’s gone. Because Turner has a greater upside offensively, he’s David Wright’s replacement at third base and will get more reps than Zach Lutz, Brandon Hicks and Brian Bixler. He is starting and hitting second in today’s game against Miami in Port St. Lucie. Wright was examined yesterday in New York...

St. Regis

It's the night before St. Patrick's Day. I'm despondent about David Wright, Daniel Murphy, and Justin Turner all being injured so I go on a bender. I wake up hung over, I turn on the television to check out the Mets game wondering who the Mets might bring in or bring up to replace all these guys ... and this is what I see????? Good thing I don't smoke peyote.
