from Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press, They’re having a tough time accepting that everybody’s catching up, thanks to the NHL collective bargaining agreement (one that’s become the envy of NBA owners who are willing to shut down a season if at the end there’s a comparably reconstituted business model). The Wings don’t scare anybody anymore. They’re certainly capable of jaw-dropping brilliance, but it’s much harder sustaining that excellence over long stretches. It’s less about them getting older and slower and more about the competition getting better. The days of them wrapping up playoff berths in February might be gone for the foreseeable future. It’ll be a grind navigating through the Western Conference this season. Edmonton is vastly improved. Minnesota didn’t back down against the Wings, outdueling them in a home and home. more
