The Purdue Boilermakers have had some terrible luck the last few seasons.  The previous two seasons, which were seasons that Purdue were Final Four contenders, essentially derailed by knee injuries to Robbie Hummel.  This season did carry the expectations, but saw a young team starting to gel together at the right time as the NCAA Tournament approaches.  But the Boilermakers will have to overcome great adversity to keep things together as junior guard Kelsey Barlow has been thrown off the team by coach Matt Painter, and forward DJ Byrd has been suspended.    Both Barlow and Byrd were involved in an incident that took place at Where Else, a near-by campus bar.

Byrd was arrested for public intoxication, and the police are investigating whether or not he was involved with an assault allegation.  Barlow had been kicked out of the bar earlier in the night.  Why does Byrd receive a suspension and Barlow was kicked off the team?  Because this is another strike against Barlow, who had been suspended just prior to last years NCAA Tournament.

Though both players are not considered stars on the team, Barlow had really come on as of late offensively, to go along with his great defense.  Byrd was one of the few three-point shooters on the roster.   Ironically, Byrd will be the lone senior next season with experience, and will be expected to fill the leadership void left by Hummel and Lewis Jackson.

Purdue sits at 17-9 and 7-6 overall.  They will need 3 wins to essentially guarantee themselves a slot in next month’s tournament.  They host conference leader and #8 ranked Michigan State tomorrow.
