EAST LANSING — While the timing is more of a shock than the act itself, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo announced today after the Spartans practice that sophomore Brandan Kearney will transfer from MSU. The 6-foot-5 guard from Southeastern High School in Detroit said this in his statement to MSU: “I’m thankful to Michigan State and the basketball program for the opportunity they gave me. I wish them the best of luck with the rest of their season. I wish my teammates — every single one of them — all the best as individuals and as a team. I just think it’s best for me to get a fresh start and play elsewhere.” Brandan Kearney will no longer be celebrating with MSU fans. ( Credit: Justin Wan / The State News) Kearney — who Izzo coined as “the best player at playing his role” — has decided that his particular role at Michigan State isn’t exactly what he wants it to be. Thus far in the 2012-2013 campaign, the sophomore averaged just 2.3 ppg, 1.5 rpg and 1.5 apg while playing about 17 minutes per game. He was one of the Spartans better defenders and even saw a little action at point guard this season, as he was one of the better passers on the team. It will be interesting to see which players will get extended minutes due to the departure of Kearney. I would believe a lot of these minutes would go to redshirt sophomore Russell Byrd who has had troubles of his own on the court since coming to Michigan State. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if minutes increased for junior Alex Gauna who has been an underachieving post player during his time at MSU, however, he does have the ability to spread the floor. It has not been announced to where Kearney will transfer, so stay tuned for updates on the story.
