Khalid Lewis (Photo credit: US Presswire) Red shirt Khalid Lewis will get his first chance to impact La Salle basketball for the 2013-2014 season. The now sophomore transferred after one year at the University of Delaware. With the Blue Hens Lewis was a key point guard contributing 5.2 points per game. Due to NCAA regulations Lewis had to sit the bench this past season.  This meant while his team was making its way up in the NCAA tournament, he was left in Philadelphia, not even able to travel with them. After sitting out for a year Lewis is no doubt hungry to hit the court.  But his role at La Salle might be a little bit different than the one he’s experienced in the past.  Lewis is one player intended to help fill the gap left by Ramon Galloway.   But he still has guards Tyreek Duran, Tyrone Garland, D.J. Peterson and Sam Mills ahead of him in the line-up. How Lewis improves on defense will be a determining factor on whether or not he plays.  La Salle is known for its all purpose guards and guarding the entire length of the floor causing opposing teams to adjust their offense. Coach Dr. John Giannini’s signature is his pressure defense, which is different than the true-guard position Lewis is used to playing. Offense will be just as important for the Trenton native.  Galloway averaged 17.2 points per game this past season, and the player most likely to fill his spot, Tyreek Duran, averaged 14.2 points per game. Simply put, Lewis will have to double his offensive output. These expectations should not be a problem for Lewis, as he has an advantage of a year playing against all the starters during practice and getting training under Giannini learning this new defense. Lewis is a player used to being on the court.  He started in all 32 games with the Blue Hens, helping the team qualify for the CBI postseason tournament.  He also started and playied in 117 consecutive games at Trenton Catholic Academy. Whether or not Lewis starts this year for the Explorers will remain in question, but he will be a player to look for this season as La Salle aims to continue their success.
