The 27th Summer Universiade, otherwise known as the World University Games, will be held in Kazan, Russia from July 6-17 2013. Basketball is a popular event at these games and the United States should be represented by a plethora of young talented collegiate stars. Team USA’s head coach for the World University Games is Davidson’s Bob McKillop. 29 of the nation’s top  players were invited to the World University Games training camp in Colorado Springs, CO to compete for a spot on McKillop’s roster between June 24-30. Iowa Basketball’s Devyn Marble and Aaron White will amongst the 29 players competing for a roster spot. Marble was Iowa’s top player last season and he’s expected to be one of the best players in the Big Ten next year. The Southfield, MI native averaged 15 points 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game during his junior season. The Hawkeye senior was named to the third team All-Big Ten and was an All-NIT Tournament performer. He had an up-and-down Big Ten season but Iowa’s co-captain took his play to another level in the NIT by posting 20.6 points per game. Marble is versatile enough to play the point, shooting guard, or a wing position, which will likely increase his chances of making USA’s World University Games roster. White is another one of Iowa Basketball’s gifted offensive players. The 6-8 stretch forward is a matchup nightmare due to his length and athleticism. The Hawkeye junior has the ability to run the break and throw down highlight real dunks, while being a more than capable outside shooter. White averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 46.8% from the field. The Strongsville, Ohio native was selected to third team All-Big Ten alongside Marble. He’s listed as a center on the 29 player training camp roster even though he usually plays the four. White does have experience playing down low as he sparingly    played center for the Hawkeyes during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Having two players try out for the World University Games is a big deal for head coach Fran McCaffery’s program. The rebuilding process seems to be taking another step forward now that Iowa Basketball has two of the country’s top 30 players. There will be high expectations in Iowa City for the first time in what feels like ages. McCaffery and his players have done a great job of bringing the Iowa Basketball program back from the dark days of having Todd Lickliter at the helm, where talent was so hard to come that Lickliter started his son at point guard.   Here’s a list of the World University Games training camp roster: 2013 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games Team Training Camp Roster NAME POS HGT WGT DOB YOG SCHOOL HOMETOWN Eric Atkins G 6-2 182 12/14/91 2014 Notre Dame Columbia, MD Markel Brown G 6-3 190 01/29/92 2014 Oklahoma State Alexandria, LA Deonte Burton G 6-1 190 07/26/91 2014 Nevada Los Angeles, CA Quinn Cook G 6-1 175 03/23/93 2015 Duke Washington, DC Bryce Cotton G 6-1 165 08/11/92 2014 Providence Tucson, AZ Spencer Dinwiddie G 6-6 200 04/06/93 2015 Colorado Woodland Hills, CA C.J.
