As a Floridian, I spent most of the college football season watching the Florida Gators kick SEC competition in the tail. On the defensive side of the ball, Sharrif Floyd proved to have one of the bigger feet on the team. As the season wore on the Gators' defense proved a formidable unit against the best talent in the country, Floyd's draft stock rose like the stock market following an election.During the off season workouts and performances, Floyd continued to prove he was a "special" player. Then, on draft day, when it was expected that he would not make it past the third overall pick, Floyd took a tumble Humpty Dumpty would not have wanted to take. What did the other 22 teams know that the Vikings didn't? Is there a reason to be concerned about a talent falling that far? Warren Sapp tumbled. Ray Lewis tumbled. Aaron Rodgers tumbled. I'm not saying Floyd will be anything like the players just named, but it has to stop and make you think. While his size and his quickness are assets to his game, there are some questions about his game. Floyd has a tendency to lose sight of the ball and get too caught up in hand-fighting with offensive linemen. Some of this is due to the fact that he often stands up at the snap, losing his natural leverage advantage, as well as his impressive combination of burst and strength. This according to cbssportsline.com.Floyd also has a lot to still learn. He is a rough project in some terms. How will his 297 pounds handle 300 pound-plus offensive tackles and guards who will look to get past him quickly to establish the run game. He also has great initial quickness but does not appear to have the sustained quickness to translate into a consistent interior pass rush threat.Gator defenders have not had great success in the NFL. Ralph Ortega, Huey Richardson, Clifford Charlton and Derrick Harvey to name a few. Will Floyd be better than these former college greats or fall into the smae category as them?
