Jarvis Jones had an up and down career in college. After a stellar high school career, Jones took his talent to Southern California to play for the Trojans and, then coach, Pete Carroll.Jones suffered a neck injury in the eighth game of the year and his career at USC came to an abrupt end. Carroll then departed for the NFL and Jones returned home to Georgia to play for the Bulldogs. He redshirted the 2010 season to get healthy and prepare for the rigorous schedule of the SEC. This decision paid major dividends for Jones and in his sophomore season, he garnered consensus All-American and First Team All-SEC honors along with being named a Butkus finalist.Jones built on this momentum and in 2012, he led the nation in sacks (14.5), tackles for loss (24.5), and forced fumbles (7). With all this being said, Jones was diagnosed with a condition known as spinal stenosis that has caused other NFL players to call it quits such as Marcus McNeill, Chris Samuels, and Michael Irvin. This is one of many reasons why I believe Jarvis Jones will be a bust.5 reasons why Jarvis Jones will be a bust in the NFL:1). Jones is inconsistent when using his hands to disengage from blockers. Offensive linemen and tight ends in the NFL will be stronger and faster than the ones he saw in college and Jones will have a tough time adjusting to this.2). It is unclear whether Jones will be able to hold his own in open space with NFL running backs. This has a lot of teams skeptical about his potential.3). Jones played mainly as a rush linebacker at Georgia and he is not particularly smooth in drop backs while covering the pass. Teams will pick apart Jones in one-on-one coverages.4). I see him as a one-position player that will put his hand on the ground and try to get after quarterbacks. He doesn’t have the speed to chase down runners and can’t drop back in pass coverages which will hurt him if playing a 3-4 defensive scheme.5). Finally, the most alarming thing about Jones might be his long-term durability. As I stated previously, he suffers from spinal stenosis which is a major concern for many NFL teams.
