welcome to The Sports Bank 77 in 77. We’re previewing one team a day everyday as the college football season approaches. And we’re doing it in rapid fire sequence. Today, the South Carolina Gamecocks

Go here for the basketball version of this column #97 South Carolina Gamecocks

2011 was: a banner year, the first 11 win season in school history. Included was a trouncing of Nebraska in a New Year’s Day bowl. The Old Ball Coach has this team contending for national power now. *****!

2012 will go smoothly if:  the defense is simply the defense, as they were 11th in the nation in scoring in last season. 2nd vs the pass, 3rd overall. The O is where the question marks are even though they return 6 starters. The D returns the same amount. #1 overall recruit Jadeveon Clowney has and will keep living up to the hype. He commands a double team on almost every play. FS D.J. Swearinger (also an all name team member) is a stud in the secondary.

2012 will be rough if: Gotta hope Steve Spurrier has settled the quarterback situation and Connor Shaw is really the man indeed. RB features the monster Marcus Lattimore; just need to hope his ACL has helaed properly. If healthy, he could be headed to an NFL gig soon.

BMOC: all the dudes I mentioned plus the rest of the secondary,

All Name team: TE Justice Cunningham, S Kyle Fleetwood

Bottom Line: 9-11 wins looks likely. They might be deserving of more, but it all depends on if they stay healthy at the positions where they have little depth. This year needs to be a big step. They’ve been 20-7, and seek their second SEC title game appearance in three years. GO *****
