A top 20 pre-season fantasy player, David Wright is and will continue to be one of the biggest fantasy busts of 2007. Why? The answer is pretty simple actually...

I've been saying David Wright is the most overrated fantasy player for some time now...His numbers have never really been anythng all that special for a 3B (outside of the SBs). All his hype is based on projected improvements which we have never seen out of him!

Not to be that guy once again, but you have Wright ranked as the #4 third baseman on your website. If you felt he was that over-rated, why would you put him that high on your list?

    I have two comments

    1) Why does Wright look like the guy from Office Space who works at Flingers and says "Get a room you too!"

    2) David Wright has been known to press. In the minors one year, he wasn't hitting for as much power as the team thought he should be. The diagnosis, he was spending too much time in the batting cage, wearing himself out before games. When they finally got him to back off of that routine, he started hitting for power again. I think he's pressing now. He may have worse numbers than last year, but I think he's going to have a few ridiculous spurts that will ultimately make his numbers look pretty nice. I love the boldness on the 17 HR claim, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't surpass that. So shocked that I'll send an autopenned 8x10 of yours truly, Roger Dorn to you if he ends up in the teens in the power department.

I would've held out for some "shrimp poppers" or "pizza shooters"

If a bust is a top 5 guy at his position than I guess he will be a bust.

But will he be a top 5 fantasy baseball producer at third? As for the norm, his good defense doesn't help a fantasy owner. The thing is, everyone who drafted him penciled in about 30 HR & spend a high pick or a high $$$ amount on him. The 30 HR just isn't going to happen. He'd be a perfect 2 hitter in real world baseball until he can (if) regain his power but Paul does such a good job in that role I can't see the Mets moving him. I still stand by my November prediction of 17 or fewer HR. That would make him a fantasy bust for 2007.

    Completely agree on Wright.

Roger: strangest thing in the world. I posted my column today with a reference to the same exact guy from Office Space, only to peruse YardBarker and notice you had made the same comparison. I'm not sure what the odds are on that, but I'm sure they're not very good.

Not to be that guy but on your website's PDF cheat sheet you guys have Wright ranked as the #12 player overall in fantasy baseball...

Derek, I'm just reading these comments for the first time since I posted. Either I copied your work (which I didn't) or David Wright really is that guy. I'm going with option number two.

For the sake of David Wright's fantasy success, we need to come up with a cooler celeb/movie look-alike. Unfortunately, I hate the Mets so all I could come up with was Paula Poundstone with shorter hair.

Yeah Utley, Manny, and Pujols are busts as of right now too I guess. Might want to see how the whole season plays out.

Yeah, but is Wright really slumping? He's hitting over .300. Its just that his power has disappeared since the all-star break of 2006.

This thread rules. Lot's of serving going on. Yeah, I just said served. Keep it going boys. I want as many people to chime in so we can read this in 5 months and call people out.

Good call, let's keep this thing going.

Since the 2006 all-star break (including 2007), David Wright has had:

    301 AB
    6 HR

Let's assume he has a 602 AB season and keeps this "torrid" pace.

    Final Stas:

    602 AB
    12 HR

This would place him slightly above Ryan Freel in HR's. Freel would average just above 10 HR in 602 AB, pro-rated from 2006 numbers.

Wish I could re-edit instead of replying. Oh well.

Anyways, some may say he's slumping but 301 AB is far from a small sample. That's more than half a season's worth of AB's. So throw the "slow start/slumping" arguement out the window...
  • hotfoot
Well, with such a well thought out argument, and a sample size of one month, how could I disagree with you.

I guess using your analysis, Albert Pujols, Mark Teixera, and Travis Hafner, Derek Lee and Ryan Zimmerman will be fantasy busts this year as well, since they're all off to slow starts this April.

In case you weren't paying attention, which it seems is the case, David Wright put up a .305 BA/.375 OBA/.469 SLG in the second half of last season. He's not a 40 home run guy either, he's a gap to gap hitter who might get you 25 dingers a year.

Words of wisdom from the Geico caveman, maybe you should do a little research next time.

You're arguement in-fact proves my point. Many other pubs (including BP) pointed to Wrights 2nd half stats as a signal for a rebound. We felt it was the opposite. He didn't struggle in the second half, in-fact, he had a very good half statistically. Yet the long ball all but left his game. We felt this was a signal for a lower HR total in 2007. Other sources felt it was just a snag.

If you recall, or if you took the time to read the article in question, we made the David Wright low HR total call way back in November, not after a couple of weeks of sample size/slumping. Say what you will, but so far our prediction is looking pretty good!

On top of that, as with many "Internet Guys", you have to resort to childish name calling. Way to go tough guy!
  • David Wright is ranked in the top 20 in Yahoo Fantasy Baseball and I have him on my team how can you say he is a bust, Last Year he was runner up in the Home Run Derby and pretty much led the mets to the playoffs along with Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran. This year he has like 14 stolen bases second on my my team by the way and got the player of the month in June. He hit four home runs in four games. He is one of the best third basemen's in the game i would say second or third.
  • Good call. This is a perfect example of why you don't deal in absolutes.
David Wright may set a career high in home runs and be a 30-30 player this season. He's a legitimate MVP candidate.
