The Mets went from acting like the aging, 1980s Frank Sinatra who croaked out songs and needed a teleprompter to remember the words to the swingin', fedora-wearing, '50s-era, care-free Sinatra in the span of three weeks. They're playing with the confidence of a team that has the world on a string. They have a bounce in their step that they hadn't had earlier in the year and are completely rejuvenated. Who are these guys? The Mets go into the second half of the season with a nine-game winning streak, and everything seemingly going right for them. Jerry Manuel has them hustling and playing an aggressive, fearless brand of baseball. I walked into my living room with the Mets game on the TV the other night, and Gary Cohen just got finished saying Carlos Delgado hustled out a double. My head spun 360 degrees around. Carlos Delgado? Hustle? In the same sentence? They're taking the extra base, beating out would-be double plays and stealing more bases. Some of the oldsters on the team are now gone. Moises Alou certainly would have helped the team if he could have stayed in the lineup, but it's probably a good thing that the Mets now know he's out for the season instead of constantly waiting and hoping for him to come back. There's a rumor El Duque's just around the corner but nobody's really holding his breath. And is it a coincidence that the Mets started winning when Luis Castillo went on the shelf? It certainly helps that players like Damion Easley and Fernando Tatis have found the fountain of youth. And Delgado is stinging the ball almost every at bat. Who knows how long they'll continue to produce, but it may have to be for the rest of the season because the Mets really don't have the chips to make a major move at the trade deadline. They only have a few real prospects left, and its doubtful Omar Minaya will give them up for somebody like Raul Ibanez. And they probably don't have enough of anything to get Xavier Nady. While the veterans have been playing like youngsters, a litter of kids have stepped up their performance. Mike Pelfrey was the NL pitcher of the week, Oliver Perez is pitching lights out and the whole bullpen has been phenomenal (maybe the magic's in the beards the whole staff are growing?I haven't seen this much hair since my daughter's preschool production of Planet of the Apes). Jose Reyes is back to being the best leadoff hitter in baseball, and David Wright is among the league leaders in RBIs. The Mets just look like a completely different team right now than the one in April, May and June. Their pitching has been making history (keeping opposing teams to three hits or less in five consecutive games, four shutouts in six games), the fielding has been sharp, their execution has been spot-on and they actually know what situational hitting is now. They have a 17-8 record under Manuel, and playing like a team instead of a collection of lackadaisical individuals. Let's see if the All-Star break doesn't snap their momentum. The way they figure it, they'll need about 43 more wins to secure a playoff spot, so, just like in the movie Major League with owner Rachel Phelps, they've put a life-size cardboard cutout of Fred Wilpon in the clubhouse, but will strip off a piece of his clothing after each loss, hoping to keep him as fully clothed as possible and roar into the playoffs.

Wagner's Latest Failure Is Unnerving

The Mets are poised for a smooth pennant run, but their closer Billy Wagner could make it a bumpy ride.

The Mets are streaking on both sides of the ball

The Mets have been the team that we thought they could be, finally. Mike Pelfrey has blossomed into a wonderful pitcher, Johan Santana has plugged away at his consistently wonderful pace, and Olvier Perez has switched his mechanics and seen great results. The bats are back too, as Carlos Delgado is getting on track (maybe), Jose Reyes is on an absolute tear after getting off to...

Welcome to first place, Mets fans; Mets win 10-8

Johna Santana has his worst start in blue and orange, lasting a mere four innings and allowing five runs to score before getting chased. The Mets didn't seem to care. The bullpen faltered, for the first time in 22 innings. The Mets didn't seem to care. Billy Wagner blew the save in the All Star game. The Mets didn't seem to care.

Training Day

Recently, I was forced to take a sabbatical from Bugs & Cranks due to a chronic case of new fatherhood.  In the time I was gone, the Mets went on a torrid nine-game winning streak, and are currently making good ol' Cholly Manuel test the limits of his WaWa-brand Depends. Aside from Wagner blowing the All-Star [...]

Fernando Tatis Doesn't Suck? Huh?

There's a lot of reasons why the Mets are on a 10 game winning streak. The pitching is actually stepping up, from the starters to the bullpen everybody is pitching better for Jerry than they did for Willie. Additionally their key hitters Reyes, Wright and Beltran are hitting at a high level as well as a re-emergence of Carlos Delgado as a viable major leaguers. Of the reasons...

A Mets Fan Officially Enters an Alternate Universe

Honestly, what the f*&! is going on here? Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not complaining. But who in the world is this team I'm watching??!!! It can't be the Mets. No, the Mets were a bumbling, unemotional group that couldn't fight their way out of paper bag. Once they were down, they were inevitably out. They played bad, dumb, uninspired baseball. Inconsistency...

Early Morning Madness: Tied for first place edition

It's time to put Luis Castillo, Orlando Hernandez, and Moises Alou in an air conditioned bus, send them down the coast, and have them placed into Del Boca Vista Retirement Facility. Maybe the Mets could even buy them a Cadillac, a tip calculator, and one of those fancy pens that can write upside down. And when they get there, each would have a card on the kitchen table...

Are the New York Mets giving me heart problems??

For the past six weeks, my heart has been sporadically pounding in my chest as I sit on the couch and do nothing. Honestly, I'm just lounging around, browsing the web, petting my dog, and watching the New York Mets play baseball... That's it! The Mets are causing my heart problems! I've been to the doctor, so there's no reason to worry about me, and everything...

The Mets' Metness

While all teams have a history, good, bad, great or pathetic, they also have some qualities about them that make them stand out from the others. At one end of the spectrum you have franchises like the Cardinals and Yankees with a long line of championships and Hall-of-Famers. The other end has the Tampa Bay Rays. Some have legendary announcers, a crazy mascot or a quirky moment in...

It’s Official: David Wright is Luckier Than You

Dave, from the Mets' faithful — our hats are off… Thanks, props, hat tips, chin nods, hugs and warm fuzzies go out to The Big Lead, for the photo, the inspiration, and my renewed interest in staring at other people's girlfriends.

Early Morning Madness: Baseball, come back! edition

Three days of suffering is over. Baseball will return to all of our lives tonight, and the world is a better place. I missed baseball. I get home from work around 6:00 p.m. every night. That usually gives me ample time to decompress, eat, check my e-mail and whatnot and have enough time to gear up for the Mets game. The Mets are my escape. It's great to come home after...
